The incident occurred shortly after seven in the vicinity of Commerce and Gleason avenues, in the Castle Hill sector.

According to the authorities, the incident occurred while a BMW that was carrying out reckless maneuvers turning in circles was struck by a white Jeep Cherokee.

This caused both the driver of the crashed car and eight pedestrians to be slightly injured.

All were transferred to different hospitals in the area.

After the fact, witnesses saw a jeep with New Jersey license plates flee the scene.

Important Changes Coming to Service on Lines F and M: Track Replacements and Temporary Suspensions

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 27, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

As of this Monday there will be important changes in the service of lines F and M.

Track replacements between Manhattan and Queens will affect service through at least the first quarter of 2024.

The rail change will force the F train to bypass the Queensbridge, Roosevelt Island, Lexington Avenue and 57th Street stations.

The M line will also be partially suspended and will not run in either direction between the Rockefeller Center and Forest Hills-71st Avenue stations.

The MTA says these changes will improve reliability for nearly 150,000 daily riders and that it will provide buses between Roosevelt Island and Lexington Avenue to replace the subway.

But this service will only work between 5 am and midnight.

The Congestion Charge Debate: Controversy and Passion Erupts Over Toll Proposal in Lower Manhattan

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 23, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The congestion charge issue causes passionate discussions and slogans on both sides; those who support the collection of a toll for drivers entering the commercial districts of Lower Manhattan from 66th Street, and those who say that paying an extra 23 dollars will affect their pocket.

After interrupting the press conference, he was removed by two policemen, to later give the floor to those who are in favor of the toll.

“The four million riders of our Subway System and the 1.5 million New Yorkers who use the buses deserve to see the money we collect from congestion pricing be invested…in improving the system.”

According to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority or MTA, the collection of this toll will mean less traffic, better air quality, it will facilitate the movement of people, it will raise billions of dollars to improve the signals and stations of the MTA, Metro- North and Penn Station, directly benefiting users like Juan Diego Restrepo who uses the subway daily:

“Because it will reduce the number of cars that are entering the city, we are going to give other options to our streets for people who are driving so they can enter the city faster, faster trains, more cycle paths.”

The MTA would possibly charge $23 for a rush-hour ride downtown and $17 off-peak for E-ZPass holders.

Critics of the implementation of these fees also worry that the tolls could push more trucks onto the Cross Bronx Expressway, neither are taxi drivers, Lyft and Uber drivers happy.

Alia Soomro of the New York League of Conservation Voters notes, “Money from congestion charges will go into the MTA’s core budget, which will go directly to improving public transportation.”

Meanwhile, in the plenary session of the municipal council, in a public hearing they discussed the issue, listening to the benefits of the congestion charge, councilman Ralph Palladino opposes the toll, pointing out that it is a farce.

The collection of tolls would come into effect from the spring of next year, in fact, they are already working on the infrastructure for this purpose.

MTA’s Interborough Express Project: A Game-Changer for New York City Commuters

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 19, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

Carmen Castro lives in Queens and takes two trains and one bus every week to get to church in Brooklyn.

“And sometimes when we travel at night it takes us two hours to get from Brooklyn to Queens,” Castro said.

Carmen is excited about the MTA’s project to open a direct train line that will take her from Queens to Brooklyn.

“I think it’s the best thing that the government can do, make changes in the way of transportation for all New Yorkers.”

The Interborough Express project will connect 20 neighborhoods on its 14-mile stretch from Bay Ridge in Brooklyn to Jackson Heights in Queens.

Representatives of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Wednesday that they would use ‘light rails’ or light rail.

According to the MTA, these trains offer more transport agility since they can turn and stop without difficulty.

The budget for the project is more than 5 billion dollars.

Most of the funds, according to the MTA, will be used to rebuild 45 transit bridges along the route that is currently used for freight train transit.

These are some benefits of the Interborough Express route or Project, according to the MTA:

*It will transport 115 thousand users per week.

*Route will connect to 17 subway lines and Long Island Rail Road

*Rides may take less than 40 minutes

For many users this project means a very positive change in their lives.

“It means that I save a lot of time on the way and you know that time is precious, right?” said Radamés Salcedo

The project is still in the evaluation phase.

City Implements Crackdown on Overweight Trucks, Aims to Increase Longevity of BQE

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 13, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

The city will begin cracking down on overweight trucks on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, better known as the BQE.

Aldo Marín, a truck driver, indicates: “It won’t damage the highway other cars and well, I think that it will also help with time because just as they made more lanes in the George Washington, here it will be the same, not very trucks big only small cars and small trucks, everything will move faster.”

Executives from the city Department of Transportation say this is an attempt to increase the longevity of this highway.

Paul Schwartz, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Transportation’s Bridge Division:

“He is over 70 years old. And like any bridge or structure that’s been in service for that long and has received the amount of wear and tear that this structure has received, you know, there are repairs that need to be made. And we’re looking to do some of those repairs as soon as this year.”

He stressed that the BQE is a safe highway and one of the most monitored structures in the city, but that very heavy vehicles have damaged the highway.

To find out the weight of the trucks, the city is using a new “weight in motion” system.

This state-of-the-art technology involves a series of sensors and cameras that are going to be installed on the road.

According to authorities, the plan is to install them first in Queens-bound traffic, and as for Staten Island-bound traffic, they are expected to be installed later this year.

Trucks must weigh a maximum of 80,000 pounds. Those who break the rule will be fined $650 starting November 8.

Some drivers we spoke to told us this would be a setback for those who drive heavy vehicles.

“But you also have to find the right place where heavy transport can also pass because I also drive with a truck that carries weight and it is my only route so far because I cannot go through another one,” says Olga Reyes, truck driver. .

DOT says repair plans are in the works and will require some weekend closures.

And that the first fixes, which will probably take place in late September and early October, will have a major impact on traffic.

Summer Streets: Enjoying Car-Free Streets for Recreation and Fun in New York City

by Chief editor of world-today-news.com August 11, 2023
written by Chief editor of world-today-news.com

It is the opportunity to enjoy some streets, normally used by cars, to walk, jog, ride a bicycle and play on them.

Summer Streets, organized by the Mayor’s Office and its Transportation Department, held its second day, this time in Manhattan, with various activities for everyone.

“Dedicated miles, cultural, educational diversity, opportunities for cyclists to ride their bikes. CITI Bike free, it was Saturday, it is today and it would also be the other three Saturdays we have left. Today is Manhattan, and we come to tell the residents of Manhattan, of New York, the visitors that what Summer Streets used to be from the Brooklyn Bridge to 79, today we reached the heart of Harlem at 125 a.m. Clayton Powell Jr.,” says Ydanis Rodríguez, the city’s Transportation Commissioner.

Summer Streets Saturdays run through August 26 and are from 7am to 1pm.

This initiative was created since 2008, this time around 20 miles free of cars.

Another novelty is that the program is present in the 5 boroughs of New York, the first weekend began in Staten Island and Queens, this and the following two weekends are here in Manhattan and the last two Saturdays of Summer Streets will be in Brooklyn and the Bronx, respectively.

All activities are free and include sports such as volleyball, contests, water and food stations, among others.

Arismeidy Ureña Díaz, volleyball player indicates:

“It means a lot because we come here to have fun between teams.”

Yvonne Ortega adds:

“When you come to New York, it’s on the run. There are many people walking, watching the traffic, and sometimes you want to stop to take a picture, you can’t, the cars are waiting, you have to cross. This is the opportunity to take the time to see what is around you that no one normally takes.”

“One now, when you reach this age when you are using medicines and going to the doctor and all that and the first thing the doctor tells you is that you do walk or exercise and when I go for a walk or ride a bike I stay in shape” adds Ortega.

The program has been so well received that there are those who want to see it in their own neighborhood:

“We truly know that this New York community needs this type of recreation, which is Summer Streets. You have to take it to Washington Heights too!” exclaims Ramón Rodríguez, a resident of the area.
