Pope Leo XIV Names Archbishop Piero Pioppo Apostolic Nuncio to Spain and Andorra
VATICAN CITY – Pope Leo XIV โฃhas appointed Archbishop Piero โPioppo as the new Apostolic nuncio to spain and the Principality โof Andorra, the Vatican announced โขtoday. The โappointment marks a notable move for the seasoned diplomat, who brings extensiveโฃ experience inโ international ecclesiastical relations to the Iberian Peninsula.
Archbishop Pioppo, currently โขtheโข Titular Archbishop of Torcello, โคpreviously served as โขApostolic Nuncio to Indonesia and the Association of Southeast Asian nations (ASEAN).Prior to that role,he held the position of Apostolic Nuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea. The Apostolic Nuncio serves as the Pope’sโค ambassador to a nation, โfacilitating diplomatic ties and representing the Holy See.
Born in Savona, Italy, in 1960, Archbishopโ Pioppo earned a Doctorate in Dogmatic Theology. He was ordained to the priesthood and incardinated into the Diocese of Acqui Terme inโฃ 1985. He entered the diplomatic service of the Holy โSee in 1993, โwiht subsequent postings in Korea, Chile, and the secretariat of State.In 2006,he was appointed Prelate of the institute for the Works of Religion.
He received Episcopalโฃ Ordination in March 2010 following his appointment as Titular Archbishop of Torcello โขand Apostolic โฃNuncio to Cameroon and Equatorial Guinea on January 25, 2010.Pope Francis later appointed him โApostolic nuncio to Indonesia in September 2017, expanding his responsibilitiesโ to include ASEAN the following year.
