Air Pollution Disrupts Ant Societies by Erasing Their Scents

Ant colonies are facing a hidden threat: air pollution. A new study from the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology reveals that common air pollutants, specifically ozone, are disrupting the crucial scent-based communication systems that allow ants to recognize nestmates, leading to aggression and even the neglect of young.

Scent is fundamental to ant social structure. Each ant within a colony possesses a unique “odor signature” comprised of hydrocarbons, acting as a form of identification. Researchers found that alkenes, a key component of this signature, readily react with ozone – a pollutant increasingly prevalent due to human activity. Although ozone levels outside urban areas typically range around 10 parts per billion, city air can contain concentrations between 30 and 200 parts per billion.

The study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, exposed ants from six different species to ozone levels of 100 parts per billion, simulating polluted urban environments. Even a brief, 20-minute exposure significantly degraded the alkenes on the ants’ exoskeletons, impairing their ability to distinguish between colony members, and outsiders. “We had expected that ozone exposure would affect the recognition of nest mates,” explained chemical ecologist Markus Knaden, “Though, we were surprised by the dramatic change in behavior after ants had been exposed to ozone. Apparently, despite their tiny quantity, alkenes are extremely important for the specificity of the colony odor.”

The consequences of this disrupted communication are severe. In five of the six species tested, ants exposed to ozone were threatened and attacked by their own colony mates. Lead author Nan-Ji Jiang stated the research team “wanted to know if exposure to increased ozone levels would alter the ants’ odor signature, resulting in aggression upon their return to the colony.” The results confirmed their suspicions.

The impact extends beyond simple aggression. Researchers also observed that exposure to urban-level ozone corrupted brood care behavior, resulting in the death of ant larvae. This suggests that air pollution isn’t just causing social unrest within ant colonies, but also threatening their ability to reproduce and maintain their populations.

With an estimated 30,000 ant species worldwide, representing a biomass comparable to all birds and mammals combined, the potential ecological ramifications are substantial. Ants play a vital role in soil health, seed dispersal, and environmental cleanup. The study highlights a previously unconsidered way in which human pollution may be impacting insect societies. Researchers note that oxidizing pollutants like ozone have already been shown to disrupt plant-pollinator interactions and interfere with pheromone communication in flies, suggesting a broader pattern of chemical disruption.

The authors conclude that the detrimental effects of oxidant pollutants may be “even more far-reaching by jeopardizing the functionality of eusocial colonies.” The Max Planck Institute team is continuing to investigate the long-term consequences of ozone exposure on ant populations and the potential for similar effects in other social insects.
