Weight Loss Injections require Medicalโ Supervision, Warns Endocrinologist
Ankara Training and Research Hospital’s Endocrinology and Metabolic Diseases Specialist, Prof. Dr. Mustafa Altay, is cautioning the public about the potential dangers of using weight loss โinjections without proper medical guidance. Drivenโฃ by trends on social media, there’s a growing amount of โขmisinformation surrounding โthese medications, he notes.
These injections are not a โคuniversally applicableโข solution, Prof. Dr.โค Altay explained. โขThey are primarily a treatment option for individuals with type 2 diabetes and those with โฃobesity who haven’t achieved weight loss success through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise. While effective for suitable patients, administration must be overseen by a qualified physician.
Beforeโข considering these injections, a thorough evaluation by an โฃendocrinologist is crucial due to potential side effects. The medications โคrequire a prescription โand are not appropriate for everyone. Individuals mustโ have healthy kidney โand liverโค function, and cannot have pre-existing conditions like advanced heart โคfailure or a history of pancreatitis. A family history of thyroid cancer โor certainโ endocrineโ syndromes also disqualifies potential candidates.
Prof. Dr. Altay emphasized the importance of understanding healthy weight ranges. โA Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or higher is โขconsideredโค overweight, whileโ a โBMIโข of 30 or higher indicates โobesity. โข
He expressed concernโข over a recent โsurge โฃin patients requesting the injections, fueled by celebrity endorsements and online hype. “Patients are coming to the clinic โคsaying they want the injection as it promises rapid weight loss, and they believeโ they can afford โขit without consulting a doctor. This โis a perilous approach.”
A notablyโฃ alarming trend, Prof. Dr. altay warned, is โขthe circulation of counterfeit weight loss injections containing insulin. While these medications are administered via injection likeโข insulin, โthey are not the same. Usingโค insulin when it’s not medically necessary – โขparticularly for individuals without diabetes โ- can led to dangerously low blood sugar levels, potentially causing coma โขor evenโฃ death. Theseโค counterfeit products also pose risks for those with heart failure, potentially requiring intensive care,โ and can cause vision problems or โคallergic reactions.
“Patientsโฃ believe they are receiving a weight lossโฃ injection, but are unknowingly injecting insulin, whichโข canโฃ have devastating consequences,” he stated.
