Animal abandonment Surgesโฃ 14% in France This Summer,โฃ Straining Shelters
Paris, France โข – The protective Society of Animals (SPA) reported a 14% increase inโ animal collections this summer compared to last โyear, marking a peak โin activity as Franceโค grappled wiht economic hardship and extreme weather. A total of 7,628 animals were collected by the SPA’s 62 โคshelters and spa houses โinโค Julyโ and August, with โthe majorityโฃ being cats.โฃ An additional โ2,256 โanimalsโข – primarily kittens – were cared for by relay families.
the โsurge in abandoned animals โcomes amid a confluence of challenging factors, according to โฃthe SPA. “This year, weโ had to โface aggravating factors in series,” stated the organization in a press release. Theseโค included โa “tense economic and social context” with inflation impacting households and slowing โadoption rates, alongside the added strain ofโ extreme climatic conditions like heat waves and โคwildfires. โค
Requisitions โฃrelated to animalโ mistreatment also rose, as did the numberโค of veryโฃ young and sick kittens requiring extendedโ care.shelters faced further โdisruption fromโ typhus outbreaks, temporarily halting intakeโ of new cats.
“Each summer, โคwe anticipate a critical โperiod, but this yearโค again, we had toโฃ face major tensions: more requisitions, emergency arrivalsโ and considerable logistical needs, especially for kittens,” saeid Jacques-Charles Fombonne, volunteer president of โthe โขSPA.
Despite the increased โintake, the SPA managed to โmaintain adoption levels nearly equivalent to the previous summer, finding new homes for 6,989 animals in July and August. However, the organization emphasizes the meaningful strain placed onโค its resources and teams during a โขsummer marked by “accumulated difficulties.”
