EXCLUSIVE: Trafalgar Releasing has acquired worldwide theatrical rights from Lionsgate to distribute doc Andrea Bocelli: Because I Believe to theaters from September 21, 2025. The film will launch on that date in the U.S. and a host of international markets.
Blending archival footage and interviews with fly-on-the-wall moments, the film traces the journey of the celebrated Italian singer. Directed by Cosima Spender (Pole), the doc weaves together access to Bocelli with narratives from friends, family and close associates.
We spoke to the singer about the movie last year following its premiere at the Toronto film festival. Michael Meyer negotiated the deal on behalf of Lionsgate and Marc Allenby for Trafalgar Releasing. Producer is Jan Younghusband.
Bocelli said: โThe reason I welcomed with enthusiasm and gratitude the proposal to capture my entire life on film by Cosima โ in its entirety, without filters โ is reflected in the very title of the documentary: Because I Believe. I believe in people, in life, and in our heavenly father who gave it to us. I believe in the power of love โ the force that moves the world โ a love I have humbly tried to witness through my music and my life. It is for the sake of this message โ of which I remain but a modest messenger โ that I hope this film will be seen.โ
Cosima Spender added: โMy aim in this film is to evoke the atmosphere of Andreaโs world. To hear how music permeates every moment of his everyday life, to feel the force of his voice when heโs warming up, to witness his undeniable optimism, and hear him telling a good story in the way he tells it to his oldest friends. Itโs been a great privilege to be able to capture this.โ
Golden Globe winner Bocelli has sold close to 90 million records and is known for his sold out arena-sized concerts. Recent collaborators include Shania Twain, Kendji, tennis player Jannik Sinner and Lil Wayne.
The film was initially made for eOne, which was subsequently acquired by Lionsgate.
