Florida 2025 flu shots recommended as cases and ER visits increase

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 26, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Florida ⁣Health Officials Urge Flu Shots as Cases, ER Visits Rise

TALLAHASSEE, FL – October 26,⁣ 2025 – Florida health officials are strongly recommending residents get vaccinated‍ against the flu as the state ‍sees an ⁣increase in influenza cases and emergency room visits. The Centers for ⁣Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports most people recover from the⁤ flu in ⁣a few days to less than two weeks, but⁢ complications‌ like pneumonia ⁤can be ‌life-threatening.

Flu symptoms include⁣ fever or feeling feverish/chills (though not ⁢everyone⁣ with the flu will have a fever), cough, sore throat, runny⁢ or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, and fatigue. Some individuals, particularly ‍children, may experience vomiting and diarrhea.

The CDC states people with the flu ‍are contagious starting one day before symptoms appear and can remain contagious for up to five to seven days after becoming sick.

Health experts emphasize several preventative measures:

* Vaccination: COVID-19 and flu vaccines are safe and available for everyone 6 months‌ and older. The RSV vaccine is⁢ available to elderly people, ⁣pregnant women ⁤and infants.
* Hygiene: Frequent handwashing with soap and water,‍ or using hand sanitizer, helps prevent the spread of viruses. Covering your mouth when sneezing or coughing is ⁣also crucial.
* Masking: Wearing a mask in enclosed spaces, such as airplanes, ⁢can reduce transmission risk. Flu cases dropped significantly⁢ during periods of widespread masking.
* Isolation: Individuals experiencing flu-like symptoms – chills, fever, fatigue, congestion, cough, runny nose, and headaches – should stay home to avoid spreading ‍the illness. if ‌public ⁤appearances are unavoidable, masking and social distancing are‌ advised.
* Immune System Support: Strengthening⁣ the immune system through healthy eating habits, sufficient⁣ sleep, regular ⁢exercise, and stress management⁢ can help protect ⁤against infection.

Florida economy thrives but state workers struggle, report says

by Emma Walker – News Editor October 26, 2025

FloridaS booming Economy ‍Doesn’t Translate to Higher⁢ Pay⁣ for ‍State Workers, Data Shows

TALLAHASSEE, ⁣FL – Despite ranking among the nation’s economic leaders, ‌Florida state workers are significantly underpaid compared to their counterparts in ⁢neighboring states, according to a recent analysis. A legislator indicated she intends to ⁣address‍ the disparity‌ during the 2026 legislative session, saying, “The‌ State of Florida should do⁢ the same,” when asked about pursuing a state ⁤pay ⁤raise.

Florida boasts the fourth-largest economy in ‍the U.S.as measured by gross domestic product and ranks fifth in ‌per capita income. However, states with smaller economies and lower average incomes ‌are paying‌ their⁣ state employees more. This gap raises concerns about Florida’s ability to attract and retain qualified personnel, potentially impacting essential public services.

The data, compiled from‍ ZipRecruiter and the U.S. Department of Commerce, reveals a⁤ stark contrast.‌ Georgia,‌ with an economy half the size of Florida’s,⁤ offers state workers an⁣ average ‌of 13% more in pay.⁣ alabama, whose economy is one-quarter Florida’s size, pays 21% more. Both states rank in the bottom 10 nationally for per capita income, while Florida sits at 21st.

Even Mississippi, last in the nation in per capita income, compensates its state ‌employees⁢ 26% higher than florida. The U.S.⁣ Department⁢ of Commerce data⁤ shows Florida’s ⁤per capita income is significantly lower than many states offering higher ⁢state worker salaries.

The issue is expected to be a key topic during the 2026 legislative session, as ⁤lawmakers consider proposals to address the pay disparity and ensure Florida can compete for talent⁣ in the public sector.

by Priya Shah – Business Editor October 26, 2025
written by Priya Shah – Business Editor

TOKYO,May 16 – Osamu Takashima,a veteran financial analyst currently with Citigroup Securities,is observing a distinct shift in Japanese economic policy under Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, diverging from teh strategies of his predecessor,Shinzo Abe. takashima,⁢ who joined Mitsubishi Bank (now Mitsubishi UFJ Bank) ⁤in 1992 and⁢ served ⁢as chief analyst there⁤ from 2004 before moving ⁢to Citibank Japan in‌ 2010, identifies this ‌new ⁤approach as⁤ “Sanaenomics,” a departure⁣ from “Abenomics 2.0.”

Takashima’s analysis, shared ⁤with Reuters, highlights a potential ⁣recalibration of Japan’s economic ‍priorities. This shift impacts investors, businesses, and ⁣consumers ‌navigating ⁤a period of global economic uncertainty ‌and rising inflation, with implications for Japan’s long-term growth trajectory and its role in the international financial landscape. The divergence centers on a more cautious approach to fiscal stimulus and ‍a greater emphasis on lasting growth, contrasting with the aggressive monetary easing and ⁢large-scale fiscal spending that characterized Abenomics.

Is Almond Butter Healthy? Benefits, Risks, and How to Store It

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor October 25, 2025
written by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Almond Butter: A Healthy Addition to Your Diet,⁢ Nutritionists Say – But Moderation is Key

NEW YORK – Almond butter is gaining popularity as⁢ a nutritious and flavorful spread, but is⁢ it truly a health food? Experts say the answer is largely yes, offering benefits ranging from⁤ improved digestion⁢ to a boost in protein intake - but mindful consumption ⁤is crucial.

Almond butter packs a nutritional punch, delivering between 3 and 4⁤ grams of fiber‍ in just two tablespoons, ‌which promotes feelings of fullness ‍and supports⁤ digestive health, according ‌to‌ a recent report. It also provides roughly 7 grams of protein per two tablespoons, making it a valuable protein source, especially for those following plant-based diets. ⁣”It can be layered in with other⁢ sources like beans and whole grains to help you achieve your daily protein needs,” explains registered dietitian Lisa Cooke.

Despite these‌ benefits, almond butter is calorically dense, containing nearly 100 calories per tablespoon. While the fats it contains are healthy, excessive intake can ‌contribute to weight⁢ gain. Cooke‍ advises those aiming to lose weight ⁣to “stick to around one tablespoon at a time.”

Beyond⁣ calorie considerations, some individuals may experience digestive discomfort due⁤ to its high fat⁣ and fiber content. The presence‌ of oxalates in almonds⁢ also raises a‍ potential kidney stone ⁤risk for susceptible people,‌ and salted varieties can be problematic for those monitoring blood pressure. “So itS best to choose one that’s ‍low in sodium,” recommends nutritionist amy Gellman. Individuals with tree-nut allergies should avoid almond butter entirely.

However, when⁣ consumed in moderation and with these considerations in mind, Cooke affirms that ‍almond‌ butter is⁣ “a nutrient-dense food that can absolutely be part of a healthy, balanced diet.”
