Prime Minister Albanese Urges De-escalation of Political Discourse Following Alleged Death Threat
BRISBANE, โคOctober โฃ4, 2025 -โค Prime Minister Anthony albanese has called forโ a reduction in the โintensity of political debate afterโฃ a Queensland man was charged with allegedly threatening to killโข him. โNorman Dean Lake,
was โคarrested on Saturday at a property โnorth of Brisbane, accused of making the threatโค via social media.
Lake โhas been charged with one count of using a carriage service to make a threat toโ kill, an โoffense carrying aโข potential 10-year prisonโ sentence.
While declining to comment on the โคspecifics of the case due toโ ongoing court proceedings, Mr. Albanese emphasized the need forโ respectful disagreement. “I have consistently saeidโ we need, wherever possible, to turnโฃ down theโค temperature ofโฃ debate,โค and to agree and disagree respectfully,” he โstated.
The Primeโ Minister revealed a substantialโ increase in threats directed towards him, noting the concerns raised by the Director-Generalโฃ of ASIO. “Increasingly, the number of reportsโค that โI receive โฃare substantial,” he said, adding that the elevated threat level has impacted his ability to engage โwith theโข public.
mr. Albanese expressed hisโค desire to maintain accessibility, citing simple activities like purchasing dog โฃfood and walking through publicโ spaces during the campaign. “We don’t want to lose โคthat.โข It’s a great thing about Australians, and theโค great โฃthing about our country,” he said.
He โdrew comparisonsโ to the experiences of public figures in countriesโค like the United states โand โฃthe โฃUnited Kingdom, while reaffirmingโค his commitment to free speech. “We haveโ a vibrant โคdemocracy here. No-one isโข tryingโข to stifle free speech,” he said. “We need to show respect for each โคother, that doesn’t โฃmean โฃagreement, but it does mean behaving โขin a way which is acceptable.”
Mr. Lake is scheduled to reappear in the brisbaneโข Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
