KPK investigates Hajj Quota Corruption, Questions Former Religious Affairs Minister
Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is continuing its investigation into alleged corruption surrounding the distribution of additional hajj pilgrimage quotas in 2024, but has yet to name a suspect. The investigation centers on a 50/50 allocation scheme for the additional quota and potential illicit financial flows.
The case impacts Indonesian citizens awaiting their turn to perform the hajj,a once-in-a-lifetime religious journey for many Muslims. Delays in identifying those responsible and clarifying the quota distribution process raise concerns about fairness and transparency in the system. The KPK’s findings could lead to criminal charges and reforms to prevent future irregularities.
KPK spokesperson Budi Prasetyo stated on Monday (September 1, 2025) that investigators are still gathering and analyzing data from witnesses. “The KPK is still continuing to explore, analyzing information from witnesses including other witnesses and also examined,” Prasetyo said at the KPK Building in South jakarta.
Former Minister of Religion Yaqut Cholil Qouumas was among those questioned by the KPK. Investigators focused on the decision-making process behind the 2024 quota distribution, specifically the rationale for the 50/50 allocation.
“So its origin is explored by investigators, so that then a 50% -50% plotting is like what,” Prasetyo explained. The KPK also investigated potential financial transactions linked to the allocation of the additional hajj quota.
Prasetyo indicated that witnesses may be called for further questioning as needed. “Later, according to the needs of the investigator, so if it is still needed to be called a summons,” he added.
