Farmers Insuranceโ to Resumeโข Selling New Home Policies inโข california,Seeksโค Rateโฃ Hike
SACRAMENTO,CA – In a notable growth for California‘s troubled homeowners insurance market,Farmers Insurance announced today it will begin offering new โhome insurance policies acrossโข the state, ending a pause implemented last year.โฃ The move comes as โขthe insurer โคconcurrently seeks a โขrate increaseโฃ under โขthe state’s recently reformed insurance regulations.
insurance Commissioner Ricardoโค Lara hailed the announcement as “a major turning point,” stating, โ”We willโ be getting peopel off the FAIR Plan.Consumers, homeowners, nonprofits, and small business(es) are โคgoing to be able to get coverage on โฃtheirโฃ own terms. โAs โwe enter the holidayโค season,I โam grateful for theโ hard work and continued commitmentโข of my Department staff who focused on facts and movedโค these critical reforms forward with โurgency and transparency.”
Theโ decision follows the finalization of Lara’sโฃ Lasting Insurance Strategy nearly a year ago – a series of reforms intended to address California’s escalating home insurance crisis. Theโข strategy allows insurers to utilize forward-looking models of wildfire risk when setting prices and to โpass along some of the costsโฃ of reinsurance – insurance for insurers โข- to policyholders.
While experts predicted theseโ reforms would likely โฃleadโ to higher premiums,Lara emphasized the potential for โincreasedโ policy availability. Many homeowners โขhave been forced to relyโ on the California FAIR Plan, aโข state-created, privately run insurer โoffering less comprehensive coverage, frequently enough at a higher cost.
Several major insurers โhave alreadyโข applied for rate increasesโค under the new rules, including Mercury, CSAA, โขand USAA, all requesting hikes around 6.9%. Rate increases of โค7% or higher โtrigger a mandatory โขhearing โคwith consumer groups. โคTheโข FAIR Plan has alsoโข requested a 35.8% rate increase, its first since 2023, whichโข remains underโ consideration.
All โคnew Farmers โขpolicies will be subject to the insurer’s โeligibility โคguidelines.
“By removing the cap on offering new homeowners policies, Farmers is doubling-downโฃ on its commitment to california homeowners, expanding choice and availability for consumers across the state,” said Behram Dinshaw, president of personal lines forโ Farmers Insurance, in a statement. “We areโ also reaffirming our commitment to serving the โขneeds of residents โby submitting a newโ Sustainable Insurance Strategy-inspired rating plan which is โdesigned โคtoโฃ expand our offerings โto โmore homeowners across California.”
