A man got behind the wheel 2 per mille drunk in Belgium, it was proven that he hadn’t drunk anything – 2024-04-27 20:51:56
According to the accused’s lawyer, the man’s work at the brewery was just a sad coincidence.

A Belgian brewery employee has been acquitted of drunk driving charges brought against him. The man had not consumed alcohol, but his body had produced the ethanol detected by the breathalyzer by itself. Among other things, the US media ABC News reported on the strange incident.
The man suffers from the so-called brewer’s syndrome (in English auto-brewery syndrome i.e. ABS). Only about 20 diagnosed cases are officially known in the world.
When a person suffering from this rare disease eats carbohydrates, the bacteria or fungi living in their intestines produce ethanol after consuming large amounts of them.
Ethanol is absorbed in the small intestine, and the blood alcohol content of a person suffering from it can rise drastically.
Symptoms of this include drunken-like slurred speech, convulsions and loss of motor functions.
The judge did not impose a driving ban
In the case of a Belgian man, the independent statements of three different doctors ultimately saved him from drunk driving charges. All the doctors testified that the man really suffered from a rare syndrome.
The judge in the case stated that the man had not experienced the symptoms of intoxication. The man was also not banned from driving.
The charges go back to 2022, when the police measured 0.91 milligrams of alcohol per liter in the breath test of the man. In the second blow just a month later, the reading was 0.71 milligrams per liter. In Finland, the amounts correspond to about 2.18 per thousand and 1.7 per thousand of hops.
In Belgium, the drink driving limit is the same as in Finland, i.e. 0.5 per thousand.

Several batches of Parranda beer are removed from stores in Cuba due to “deterioration”
Several batches of Parranda beer were pulled from store shelves in Cuba due to “deterioration” of the product, something the company blamed on poor storage conditions for the drinks.
This product was recently introduced to the Cuban market, and is made exclusively in a factory located in the Mariel Special Development Zone. At the moment, it is the only one stored in plastic containers, unlike other similar products that are sold in glass bottles and cans.
The company indicated that, because the beer is stored in plastic bottles, its shelf life was about six months, as long as it had “favorable” conditions.
While the official statement shared by the company did not give more details such as the temperature and humidity parameters at which they must remain, this type of product usually requires a cool environment to avoid spoiling. The problem with this is that many of the state stores do not have air conditioning, so the temperatures may be too high for proper storage of a beer.
The state company assured that it deeply regretted “any inconvenience this has caused,” and that it would provide personalized attention to each consumer who approaches them through its official channels, to replace the affected bottles “with fresh product.”
“If you have experienced any inconvenience with one of our beers, we invite you to write to us on our messenger. We will analyze your specific situation and provide you with an appropriate and timely response. We want to ensure that each experience with Parranda is satisfactory and that we can exceed your expectations,” reads the statement shared on Facebook.
The company continues to withdraw the affected batches from the national market, noting that it is working to implement a new commercial policy to ensure that the Parranda beer on the market is always “fresh.”
“We have expanded our distribution network and our commercial network to guarantee point-to-point distribution in the shortest possible time,” he adds.
Finally, the statement took the opportunity to clarify that a recent decrease in the price of this product was made with the aim of making it an accessible and popular brand, and not because the expiration date of these drinks was approaching, as some users on networks social have pointed out.
“The decrease in Parranda prices in the market was done with the objective of becoming the most accessible and popular beer in the country. This decrease is not related to the latest problems we have faced,” concludes the company.
