Turku Hospital Emergency Room Overwhelmed by Flu & Virus Surge

The emergency department at Turku University Hospital (TYKS) in Finland is experiencing severe overcrowding, driven by a surge in influenza, norovirus, and coronavirus cases. As of Monday morning, approximately 30 patients were waiting for a hospital bed, according to hospital officials.

The acute strain on TYKS reflects a broader wave of infectious diseases sweeping the region. Mikko Pietilä, Director of the Wellbeing Services Area of Proper Finland, confirmed the high level of pressure on both the emergency department and general wards. “Currently, our wards and the emergency department are particularly burdened. This is mainly due to the influenza epidemic, but we are also seeing cases of COVID-19 and norovirus. All three diseases are impacting our ability to provide services,” Pietilä stated.

The hospital is adapting to the increased patient load by reallocating resources. Each ward is currently operating above its usual capacity, and additional doctors have been assigned to assist with morning rounds. This allows emergency department staff to focus on their primary responsibilities and address the most urgent cases. “We need to ensure we have enough food for everyone. We also need to schedule extra doctor’s rounds to determine the type of care patients require. This isn’t typical for an emergency department,” Pietilä explained.

This year’s influenza wave is more severe than in previous years, according to Pietilä. “Unfortunately, we see these types of illnesses around this time each year. However, this year’s influenza wave is worse than previous ones.” The situation is compounded by staff shortages, as healthcare workers themselves are falling ill with influenza and other infections, creating a negative cycle of increased demand and reduced capacity.

Norovirus, a highly contagious virus causing gastroenteritis, is also contributing to the burden. According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, norovirus outbreaks are common in settings where people are in close contact, such as healthcare facilities, schools, and cruise ships, and frequently occur during the late autumn and winter months.

Despite the challenges, Pietilä expressed cautious optimism that the pressure on the emergency department will ease in the coming days.
