DENR Series Spotlights Philippine Protected Areas
A new television series will highlight the Philippines’ natural treasures and conservation efforts. “Our Fragile Earth: Protected Areas of the Philippines” will soon air on the ABS-CBN News Channel, presenting the beauty and challenges of the nation’s protected landscapes.
Focus on Biodiversity
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) has announced the fourth season of its series, which premieres soon. The show will feature eight locations, including Siargao Island, Mt. Pulag, and other natural parks and sanctuaries. Previous seasons have already showcased 38 protected areas and five conservation zones.
The DENR-BMBโs research indicates that these protected regions confront numerous significant threats. These include invasive species, unsustainable tourism, agricultural expansion, land encroachment, and inappropriate development.

Conservation Imperative
โThis documentary series aims to put forward the stories of the protected areas as we continue to realize our commitments in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. We hope that through these PA documentaries, we can educate more people about our PAs and inspire them to produce contents that promote PA protection and conservation,โ
โMariglo Rosaida Laririt, DENR-BMB assistant director
The Philippines is among the worldโs most biodiverse countries, housing a vast array of ecosystems. These areas are essential for rare and endangered speciesโ survival. The nation, encompassing 5% of the worldโs plant species, has legal safeguards like the 1992 National Integrated Protected Areas System (Nipas) Act; the 2018 Expanded Nipas (Enipas) Act strengthened them, covering 248 protected areas. According to the World Wildlife Fund, approximately 17% of the world’s land area is now protected (WWF 2024).
Call to Action
The series, produced by the DENR-BMB in partnership with the office of Sen. Loren Legarda, aims to educate the public. Sen. Legarda, the Enipas Act’s principal author, views these protected areas as proof of effective policy and shared dedication.
โAs principal author of the Enipas Act, I see these protected areas as living proof that sound policy, everyday actions and shared commitment will safeguard the very foundation of our future. As such, we will not squander our bounty. As Filipinos โ stewards of this fragile Earth โ it is our duty to preserve these sanctuaries not only in heart and spirit but in deed, for generations yet to come,โ
โLoren Legarda
โOur Fragile Earth: Protected Areas of the Philippinesโ will air on June 28, July 5, 12, and 19 at 4:30 p.m., with replays the following day.
