European Airports Recognized for Excellence in 2025
The 2025 ACI Europe Best Airport Awards highlighted outstanding achievements in the aviation sector, celebrating airports that excel in innovation, sustainability, and resilience, with a special tribute to Ukrainian airports. The event took place in Athens, Greece, and spotlighted the efforts of airports across Europe.
Tribute to Ukrainian Airports
The event, held during the 35th ACI Europe Annual Congress and General Assembly in Athens, honored airports that significantly contribute to the aviation industry. The awards recognized both large international hubs and smaller regional airports. In a notable gesture, the Award for Outstanding Resilience was presented to Ukrainian airports.
This award acknowledged the unwavering determination of Ukrainian airports facing ongoing conflict. With their airspace closed and operational capabilities severely limited, these airports have worked tirelessly to maintain infrastructure and ensure the safety of their personnel. The award recognizes the extraordinary challenges faced and their commitment amid adversity.
Digital Transformation and Eco-Innovation Awards
The Digital Transformation Award, a collaboration between SESAR Joint Undertaking and ACI Europe, went to Munich Airport. The award highlights the effective use of digital technologies to improve safety, capacity, operational efficiency, and environmental performance. Munich Airport was recognized for its innovative use of service robots and artificial intelligence in turnaround management, enhancing passenger experience and optimizing airport operations.
The Eco-Innovation Award honored Maastricht-Aachen Airport for its Electrifly project, which provides a fully electric international travel experience. The project’s innovative approach to zero-emission air travel and collaboration with various stakeholders impressed the jury. This project serves as a model for other airports seeking to minimize their environmental impact and promote sustainable transportation.
Other Notable Awards
The HR Excellence Award was presented to Lyon Airport for its initiatives in human resources management. The airport focused on advancing diversity, equity, and inclusion, which the judges applauded. The World Business Partner Award was given to Ella Soltani of TO70 Aviation, recognizing her contributions to the airport industry. Soltani played a key role in the Environmental Strategy Committee and the Stargate Project.
Category Winners
In the Under 5 Million Passengers category, Cork Airport won for its year-over-year growth of 10% and focus on sustainability, including carbon reduction efforts. Vasil Levski Sofia Airport triumphed in the 5-10 Million Passengers category, lauded for its transformation strategy, focusing on workforce development and community ties. Hamburg Airport won in the 10-25 million passengers category, recognized for sustainability and passenger comfort. Athens International Airport won in the 25-40 million passengers category, praised for overcoming challenges and promoting destinations. Rome Fiumicino Airport was recognized for its excellence in the Over 40 Million Passengers category, commended for environmental efforts, including launching Europe’s largest solar farm. According to the Airports Council International, air traffic in Europe is expected to increase by 6.5% in 2025 (ACI Europe 2024).
These awards underscore the aviation industry’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence. These airports set new standards, leading the way for the future of air travel.
