Mountain Rescue in High Tatras Requires International Collaboration
High Tatras, Slovakiaโ – September 2, 2025 – A climber sustained lower limb injuries in a fall today, triggering a complex rescueโ operation in the High Tatras โคmountains โthat necessitated assistance from polish air rescue services. The incident underscores the inherent risksโ of mountaineeringโ and the critical importance of international cooperation in challenging terrain andโข deteriorating weather conditions.
The injured โขclimber, part โof a โcouple hiking in the pustรฉ bal area, โfell and sustained injuries too the legs. Fortunately, โthe use of a helmet prevented a serious head injury. โข Following the initial report, a crew from the High Tatrasโ Regional Center fire brigade was dispatched, transportedโค to the scene byโข a helicopter โemergencyโ medical service (VZZS) from Poprad.
Rescue efforts wereโข immediately complicated by rapidly worsening weather.The VZZS โhelicopter from Poprad was unable to โขreturn to the scene, prompting a request for support from Topr, the Polish โmountain rescue service. Topr deployed it’s โownโข helicopters, enabling the fire brigade rescuers โคand the injured climberโ to be transported to the ลฝdiarskรก cottage. From there, the climber was airlifted to Starรฝ Smokovec for further medical attention.
“The injured man was then handed over to the summoned RZP crew โand the other ofโ the couple, who โคwas โuninjured, continued separately,” reported theโ fire brigade, extending gratitude to โtheir colleaguesโ from Toprโ and โthe VZZS Poprad crew โคfor their collaborative efforts in theโ demanding rescue.
