Rhythmic Gymnastics & Tax Deductions: Preschool Education Expenses

by Alex Carter - Sports Editor February 14, 2026
written by Alex Carter - Sports Editor

South Korean parents enrolling preschool children in rhythmic gymnastics academies may be eligible for tax deductions on educational expenses, provided the academies meet specific registration requirements. The Ministry of Education has clarified that expenses incurred through monthly tutoring courses – those conducted at least weekly – at institutions registered under the ‘Act on the Establishment and Operation of Academies and Extracurricular Lessons’ or at sports facilities compliant with the ‘Act on the Installation and Employ of Sports Facilities’ qualify for the benefit.

The deduction allows parents to claim 15% of eligible expenses, up to a maximum of 3 million won annually per child. This applies specifically to children who have not yet entered primary school. The government’s intention is to support early childhood development through recognized educational and athletic programs, while also providing financial relief to families.

Tax authorities emphasize the importance of maintaining detailed records of expenditure. Proof of payment, such as tuition receipts or cash receipts, must be retained and submitted separately, as these expenses may not be automatically reflected in simplified year-end tax settlement services. Parents are advised to proactively gather and organize this documentation to ensure a smooth tax filing process.

Recent reporting indicates growing interest in extracurricular activities for young children in Singapore, with gymnastics classes being a popular option. While this reporting does not directly impact the South Korean tax deduction, it reflects a broader regional trend towards increased investment in early childhood education and athletic development.

The Ministry of Education has not yet announced any changes to the eligibility criteria or deduction limits for the upcoming tax year. Further guidance is expected closer to the tax filing deadline, and parents are encouraged to consult official tax resources for the most up-to-date information.
