Older Australians are facing notable delays in accessing crucial aged โฃcare assessments, leaving vulnerable individuals without the support they โขneed, as changes to โขthe system come into โeffect. Families are voicing concerns that the lengthy wait times and complex bureaucracy are exacerbating hardship, particularly for those without โขdedicated supportโ networks.
The delays come as new โrules โbegin in November requiring older australians entering the aged careโ system to pay for “non-clinical” services like showers andโ medicationโข assistance. Eloise Randall, whose father recently passed โฃaway after navigating the โขaged โขcareโค system, fears for others. “I really despair for the number of vulnerable elderly Australians โขin this country who have โno access to support or โsomeone coming โคinโฃ to โcheck on them,”โฃ sheโ said. โค”It’s โprobably too hard to โคsit on the phone and navigateโ the bureaucracy that is the system.”
Randall recounted her father’s experience, stating,โค “Dad’s final wishโฃ was to โspeak again. I โฃthink thisโ process shows weโฃ had to โspeak โfor him, andโ we โstill got nowhere.”
The issueโ was highlighted in a โฃrecent 7.30 report, which can be viewedโ on ABC iview โand ABC TV.
