KABUL, โAfghanistan (AP) – Afghanistan’s Taliban โขgovernment condemned Pakistan on Thursday, alleging responsibilityโ for twin drone strikes in Kabul that killed several โคpeopleโค and wounded others. โฃThe โattacks, โwhich โคoccurred Wednesday, represent a meaningful escalation in tensions between โthe neighboring โฃcountries.
Theโ Taliban government asserts โthe strikes targeted civilian areas, accusing Pakistanโฃ of violating Afghanistan’s โsovereignty. While no group has claimed responsibility, the Taliban frequently โblame Pakistan for supporting insurgent groups operating within Afghanistan, a โฃcharge islamabad denies. the attacks come amid heightened border tensions, includingโฃ recent clashes โand theโค closure of key border crossings.
The U.N. Assistance โคMissionโ in โขAfghanistan โข(UNAMA) reportedโ thisโ week that 37 civilians were โkilled and 425 wounded in Afghanistan consequently of cross-border clashesโ with Pakistan. casualties occurred in Paktya, Paktika, Kunar,โ Khost, Kandahar and Helmand provinces. UNAMA has also documented at least 16 civilian casualties inโค earlier clashes. “UNAMA calls โคon all parties to bringโ a lasting end to hostilities to protect civiliansโ and prevent further โคloss of life,” the mission stated.
Pakistan has not released figuresโฃ for civilian casualtiesโข on its sideโ of โฃthe โฃborder. Islamabadโ repeatedlyโ accuses Afghanistan of harboring militants, a claim the Taliban rejects. Pakistani officials reported Thursday thatโฃ security forces killed dozens of militants who crossedโฃ from Afghanistan into the Mohmand district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.
The twoโ countries share a 2,611-kilometer (1,622-mile) โคborder known โas the Durand Line, which Afghanistan has never recognized. The recent escalation follows a surge โin attacks withinโ Pakistan as 2021, โwhich Pakistani authorities attribute to groupsโ operating from Afghan soil. Both al-Qaida andโค other militant groups are believed to be attempting to resurface in the region.
