Iowa⁢ Women’s Basketball to Host Ashland in Exhibition ⁤Game Tonight

IOWA CITY, Iowa – The University of Iowa women’s basketball team will begin its 2024-25 season with an exhibition game⁣ against Ashland University tonight, Thursday, Oct. ⁤30, ⁤at 6:30 p.m. CT at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City. The Hawkeyes, featuring a roster with nine underclassmen, will ⁤use the game to prepare for the upcoming regular season.

Ashland‌ enters ⁤the contest ranked No. 6 in the WBCA preseason Division⁤ II ‌poll, boasting a 32-4 record from last season adn a national⁣ title game appearance. This exhibition provides Iowa an early test against a highly-ranked opponent.

Hudson’s Detroit to Host New ⁤Restaurant from union Square Hospitality Group,Founded by Danny Meyer

DETROIT – Hudson’s‍ Detroit,the landmark skyscraper currently under ‌development,will welcome a new restaurant concept from Union ‍square Hospitality Group (USHG),the acclaimed hospitality company founded by Danny Meyer,in ⁢2026. The addition signals a notable investment in⁤ Detroit’s burgeoning culinary scene and⁣ further cements the building’s position as⁣ a premier⁤ destination.

USHG, ⁤known for⁣ its⁢ portfolio of award-winning establishments‌ including The View, Gramercy Tavern, and The Modern, has earned 28 James⁢ Beard Awards over‌ the years. While details about the‍ Detroit restaurant remain limited, the project underscores the growing national recognition of the city’s vibrant food and beverage landscape.⁤ Hudson’s detroit is also set to house a luxury Edition⁤ Hotel and 96 condos on floors 26 through 45.

“Detroit‌ has the best restaurants and chefs in the country, and the arrival of Union Square‌ Hospitality Group signals that the world has taken notice,” said Andrew Leber, senior vice president of hospitality at ⁣Bedrock, in a press release. “Hudson’s Detroit is creating new and unforgettable experiences for ⁢everyone, further‌ solidifying the city as a must-see destination.”

Prior to USHG’s arrival, ‍Hudson’s will welcome One two three, a French café truck⁤ from the team behind Cafe Underground, on Nov. 6. The café will be located along Nick gilbert way and offer coffee⁣ and pastries from local suppliers.

Shawnee Building Collapse: Road Reconstruction Plans & Historic Loss

SHAWNEE – A section of downtown Shawnee was closed to ⁤traffic Wednesday ⁢afternoon after ‌a two-story building collapsed next to the historic⁣ Ritz Theater. ⁣No⁢ injuries⁣ were reported.

The Shawnee Fire ⁢Department reported the collapse occurred around 4‌ p.m. The town⁤ shut down the intersection of Broadway Avenue ⁢and Main‌ Street, and ⁤the stretch ⁤of Main Street between Broadway ⁢and Beard avenues.

The building at 6 W Main Street most‍ recently housed a marijuana dispensary and previously a computer store. an ‌adjoining storefront within the collapsed building was formerly Stompin’ Sensation Studio. ‍The ‍building had been vacant for approximately three years following a fire.

An employee of the Ritz Theater told The Oklahoman the landmark appeared ‌undamaged. A Saturday concert by the‌ band Showdown has ‌been cancelled, and an engineer will inspect the theater.

Another historic building across the ‌street from Wednesday’s collapse ⁢was lost in ⁢2023. That building, once home to the‍ Ole Town Shawnee⁤ Flea‍ Market and featuring a vintage Dr.Pepper mural, was⁢ torn down after being damaged by fire. It was built in 1907.

Memphis Man Trades Badge for‌ Dental Tools, Pursues New Career ⁤at UTHSC

MEMPHIS, Tenn.- A former University of Tennessee Health Science center ‌(UTHSC) campus police officer is now on teh other side of the classroom, pursuing ‌a degree in dentistry. Marshall Jones jr., 38, is navigating the rigorous demands⁣ of‌ the dental⁢ program while balancing family life, including ‌caring for his 2-year-old son who has developmental ⁣delays.

Jones initially applied too ⁢the UTHSC School of Dentistry but ‌was⁤ not accepted. Undeterred, he ⁤reapplied a year later ⁤and was⁤ admitted. He acknowledges the⁢ challenge of balancing school and home responsibilities, stating, ⁢”Marriage is first… I ⁣have to take care of ⁢home first.” He ⁣credits his instructors with⁣ understanding the demands placed on student parents, particularly those with children requiring frequent appointments.

Despite being older than most of‌ his classmates, Jones says he has adapted well, learning to “respect the space” and finding ⁤common ground with younger students. He’s become a‍ source of advice on topics ranging from music and anime to practical matters like ‌home buying and car insurance.

Jones is poised to enter‌ a field where he will be a distinct minority. Onyl 6.9% of dental⁤ hygienists are male,and just 3.7% are Black.⁣ he believes ⁢his presence as a “unicorn” in the profession will be particularly impactful when working with⁤ children. “So with the kids, it’s nice to see someone that looks like you, and you’re doing something positive with your life,” he said. “If they see that… he’s doing something good and he’s happy,maybe I⁣ can pursue this too.”

Jones encourages others considering a career change or return⁤ to school ‌to embrace the challenges. “I think⁤ that it’s ⁤hard ‍when⁢ you’re complacent, when you feel cozy in a box,” he said.”It’s scary, it’s hard, because you’re leaving something that you know… it’s a risk. If you ⁣really want something, you will find a‍ way to get it.”
