For 2,500 years, the Greek philosopher Heraclitus has โคremindedโ us that change isโ the only constant. Yet, despite this โฃenduring truth, humans often struggle โฃwith โflux. Perhaps that’s โคwhy we find solace in artists who not only acknowledge change โbut embrace it. โข
Brooklyn โคindie โrock darlings Big Thief are masters of this art.โ Their music, aโ constantly evolving blend of folk-infused sounds, demands a comfort โคwith shifting moods and textures. Each member’s restless creativity extends beyondโ the โฃband, fueling individual projects that ultimately enrich their collectiveโ sound. โAnd recently, they’ve faced a especially โฃimportant shift.
Big Thief, however, remains a โremarkably grounding force in the โฃlivesโ of its members, a creative hub to which they continuallyโค return.โค “Every time โwe โgo off and do our own solo thingsโ and do othre projects, it feeds back intoโข our band,” explains frontwoman Adrianne Lenker in a recent interview โwith Double J’s Karenโ leng. “Weโข take allโ the things that we learn, and we inevitably justโค grow and get better as musicians from each project. โI โthink thatโ always ends up coming backโข and filling up the Big โThief cup.”
The past couple of years have brought โคconsiderable โฃdisruption.โ Last year, founding bassist Max โขOleartchik departed the band, a decision rooted in interpersonal dynamics. โค In a heartfelt social media post, the band acknowledged the profound impact of his contribution: “Our love for each other is infinite, and we are so grateful for โall we have shared these many yearsโข together since theโค beginning of ourโค journey as a band. we wouldn’t โbe who we are without Max. Thisโค separation marks the โend of an โera, and the beginning of a new one for Big Thief.”
this “new era” required โคthe remaining trio – Lenker, drummer James Krivchenia, and guitarist Buck Meek โค- toโฃ reimagine their soundโ without Oleartchik’s integralโ musical presence. โค
“Itโฃ wasโ a big emotional split for the band, and โwe needed a lot โขof time โto regroup asโค the three of us and sort of ground down,” Krivchenia tells Double J.โค “We did a lotโข of writing โand a lot ofโ talking, and just kept growing this pile [of songs], trying to find what the center of gravity for the โnext record was going toโข be. Slowly thereโ started โto be thisโ conglomeration of songs,โข were it’s like, ‘This feels โkind of likeโค the core.'”
