Oscar Watch: 201 Documentary, International & Animated Feature Eligibilityโข Lists โRevealed
Los Angeles, โฃCA – November 18, 2023 – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts โand โฃSciences has unveiled the lists of eligible films vying โคfor Oscarโ recognition in the Best Documentary Feature, Best International Feature, and Best Animated featureโ categories. A total of โ322 โฃfilms – 201 documentaries, 86 international features, and 35 animated features โข- will be โin contention this awards โseason.
This โyear’s documentary field is notablyโ robust, with 201 submissions marking the second-highest number ever. The record was set in 2021,โข a year that โคsaw an extended eligibility period and relaxed theatrical release requirements โขdue to the pandemic.
Documentary Frontrunners Emerge
Several documentaries already generating buzz within theโข industry made theโฃ cut. Titles like Netflix’s Theโข Perfect Neighbor and Apocalypse in the Tropics, โฃapple’s Come See Me in the Good Light, โand Neon’s Orwell: 2+2=5 โคare expected to be strong contenders.
The list also features personal projects from prominent actors, โincluding โข my mom Jayne, directed by Mariska Hargitay, and Stiller โ& Meara: Nothingโ Is Lost, โhelmed by Ben Stiller, both offeringโ intimate portraits of their โฃfamilies. โ Reflecting current globalโ events, โseveral documentaries focusing onโข the middle East – Torn: The Israel-Palestine Poster War on New Yorkโฃ City โคStreets, Coexistence, My Ass!, Holding Liat, and Put Your โฃSoul onโค Your Hand and Walk – also secured eligibility.
Notably absent from โฃthe list is The Eyesโ of Ghana, directed by two-time Oscar winner Ben โฃProudfoot. However, the Hollywood Reporter confirms the film hasโข been strategically held for consideration in the next awards season. Other anticipated documentaries missing from the lineup include A24’s Marc by Sofia, Sofia โขCoppola’s exploration of designer Marc Jacobs, and Questlove’s Slyโค Lives! (aka the Burden of โBlack Genius), reportedly due to submission or eligibility issues.
International Films Showcase Global Cinema
The Best international Feature category boastsโค 86 submissions,โ including five critically acclaimed films distributed byโข Neon – the same company behind the Oscar-winning Parasite. These include Norway’s Sentimental Value, Brazil’s The Secret Agent, South Korea’s โฃ no other Choice, Spain’s Sirฤt, and France’s It Was Just an Accident. โฃ It was Just an Accident, winner โof the prestigious Palme d’Or at the Cannes Filmโ Festival, presents a complex situation: directed by Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi, it was โultimately submitted by France due to its meaningful French financing, a โคmove reflecting political sensitivities.
The Academy Awards are scheduled to takeโฃ place on March 10, 2024. The coming โmonths will undoubtedly see intense โฃcampaigning and further scrutiny as the Academy narrows down the field to the final โnominees.
