Audi Sport has unveiled the RS 5, its first plug-in hybrid performance model, combining a twin-turbocharged V6 engine with an electric motor to deliver a total output of 639 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque. The novel RS 5 will be available as both a sedan and an Avant estate, marking a significant shift for the high-performance line.
The powertrain pairs a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6, producing 510 horsepower, with a 130 kW electric motor. This combination allows for a 0-62 mph acceleration time of 3.6 seconds. Audi states the RS 5 can achieve over 50 miles of all-electric range, utilizing a 25.9 kWh battery pack. The battery can be charged in 2.5 hours using an 11 kW alternating current connection.
Beyond the hybrid powertrain, the RS 5 features a newly developed quattro all-wheel-drive system with Dynamic Torque Control. This system employs electromechanical torque vectoring at the rear axle, capable of distributing torque between the rear wheels in milliseconds and applying torque differences of up to 2,000 Nm. A preload on the center differential ensures it remains partially locked, enhancing responsiveness.
Audi has also increased the chassis rigidity of the RS 5 by 10% compared to the standard A5 model. The vehicle is equipped with RS sport suspension featuring twin-valve shock absorbers, allowing independent adjustment of compression and extension. The steering ratio is 13:1, and braking options include standard steel brakes or optional carbon ceramic discs measuring 440 mm at the front and 410 mm at the rear.
The RS 5’s design incorporates a wider body – four centimeters wider than the A5 – along with distinctive features such as a Singleframe grille with a honeycomb structure, a prominent rear diffuser, and matte oval exhaust outlets. Darkened Matrix LED headlights and a specific light signature further emphasize the RS identity.
Inside, the RS 5 features an 11.9-inch Audi virtual cockpit and a 14.5-inch MMI touch display. A 10.9-inch display for the front passenger is standard. The Audi driving experience function allows drivers to analyze lap times, G-forces, and drift angles, with the option to record video via an integrated camera in the rearview mirror.
The Audi RS 5 will start at €125,750 in Spain, although the RS 5 Avant will initiate at €127,925. Orders open in Europe in spring 2026, with the first deliveries scheduled for summer 2026.
