Lassa Fever Outbreakโ Claims Lives in Nigeria,Sparks Emergency โฃresponse
Abuja,Nigeria -โ A rapidly escalating outbreak of Lassaโข fever is โturning communities across โคNigeria into graveyards,wiht โ172 deaths confirmed since January 1st,according too a recent statement from the โคnation’s Center for Disease Control. The surgeโค in cases – totalingโฃ 924 nationwide – has โฃprompted aโ stateโฃ of emergency declared by the Nigerian governmentโ on January 23, 2019.
The virus, โขfirst identified in Nigeria โขin 1969 in Borno province, isโข spread through โคcontact with the feces of infected rodents โand โcan also transmit person-to-person. It causes a severe hemorrhagic โfever, oftenโ provingโข fatal.
Health officials report that the 21-30 age group โขis disproportionately affected, and men areโข more susceptibleโค to infection than women.Last โคyear alone, 190 Nigerians succumbed to the disease.
The outbreak โขisn’t limited to nigeria’sโฃ borders. โคCases haveโ been โreported โin neighboringโ countries including Mali, Togo, ghana, Liberia, andโข Sierraโฃ Leone, raising concerns aboutโ a wider regional crisis. โขAuthorities are urging the public to practice strict hygiene โฃand avoid โขcontact โคwith mice โฃand other rodents โขto curb theโ spread of this deadly disease.
