Insurance Coverageโ Lapse Leaves Woman Facing Weight Regain After Ozempic Success
WAUSAU, WI – A wisconsinโค woman, identified as Bobbi, experienced โsignificant weight loss with the GLP-1 medication Ozempic, only to see her insurance โcoverage discontinued,โข leading to a return to her previous weight โand concerns about unregulated alternatives.
Bobbi’s insurance โprovider, TeamCare, declined โto commentโ on the reason for the coverage change. However, a TeamCare employee reportedly stated the company stopped covering medications used solely for weight loss approximately a year ago.
“So I wasโ desperate.โ I was looking onโ the black โmarketโ for anythingโข similar to it. โI was actuallyโ looking to โฃsee if anybodyโ was selling their Ozempic,” Bobbi โtold NewsChannel7.
unableโ to afford Ozempic throughโ conventional channels, Bobbi turned to a third-party weight loss drug, which was three times cheaper. Dr. Davis warned that these medicationsโข are โ”not technically FDA โregulated,”โ and concerns exist regarding proper manufacturing, dosage, and absorption.
“Soโ we don’t โalways know without a doubtโค that the medications are being made properly, โthat they’reโค at the correct โฃdose, that they’re being prescribed in โฃa way that isโ going toโ beโข absorbed correctly,” Dr. Davis explained.
Bobbi reported โthe third-party drug was ineffective,โฃ causing vomiting and providing no noticeable โฃphysical changes. She also received an incorrect dosage andโ lacked follow-up care from providers. She โhas been โฃoff all weight โขloss drugs as April 2024.
Bobbi โฃhad successfully โreduced herโค clothing sizeโฃ from an 18 to a 10 while on Ozempic, but has as returned to a size 18. “I just wanted to do โฃit โfor me. So I’dโ have a better โฃquality of โฃlife, lose โweight, gainโ confidence-and that’s all โขgone again,”โ sheโค said. โข”It’s like the golden ticket. it really is.”
The case highlights โgrowing concerns about access โto GLP-1โค medications, โฃinitially โdevelopedโ for diabetes management but increasingly prescribed for weight loss, and the potential risks associated with seekingโ unregulated โฃalternatives.
