TSV 1860 Munich is in crisis: only one win in five games – the rest were defeats. In the Bavarian State Cup, the Sechzer team were just able to avoid a disgrace against FC Memmingen. The brief resurgence at FC Ingolstadt with a 2:1 victory did not bring the hoped-for turnaround. In short: the situation in Giesing is precarious, coach Argirios Giannikis seems to be on the ropes – even if sports director Christian Werner defended the coach after the 2:3 defeat against Dynamo Dresden.

The fourth defeat in five games was close – a point would have been deserved at least because of the pressure phase towards the end of the game. The otherwise critical Löwen fans also saw it that way. In the stands of the Grünwalder Stadium – unlike in the previous games – there were no whistles or calls for the coach to be out.

Squad restructuring has not worked so far

Unlike in previous years, the 1860 bosses avoided setting sporting goals at the start of the season. No one spoke of promotion – like in previous years. “That’s why I’m looking at day-to-day life and want to develop the team further. It’s certainly not the time to build castles in the air,” said the coach, urging patience and hard work with the completely renewed team.

But the change hasn’t worked so far – there’s a lack of shots on goal up front, and the defense is too porous: The Lions have conceded eleven goals so far, more than any other third division team. Julian Guttau, who scored the 2:3 goal on Saturday, summed it up after the Stuttgart II game: “As a collective, we weren’t good enough. If we put in that kind of balls at the back, we won’t win a game in this league. That just pisses me off.”

1860 coach Giannikis: “Everyone is pulling together”

Only three points after five match days – TSV 1860 is in the middle of a relegation battle. It is questionable how long Giannikis will continue to have support – the 44-year-old’s record does not speak in his favour: he has only won three of the last 16 games, and the last five home games have all been lost. The coach himself denies a possible ultimatum: “I have not heard anything, what is being said internally is important to me. Christian Werner said that calm is important. I have the feeling that everyone internally is pulling together.”

Giannikis has been in office since January 10th. His start could not have been better. TSV remained unbeaten in the first eight games (five wins, three draws). During this time, Giannikis was one of the most successful coaches in Europe. The four defeats that followed quickly brought Sechzig back down to earth. In the end, they managed to stay in the league in 15th place.

Florian Eckl, 1860 expert at BR24Sport, sees other reasons for the Lions’ current situation. He also blames the extreme influence of the active fan scene and the dissatisfied investor Hasan Ismaik, among others. In his opinion, the Sechzger are stumbling towards the Regionalliga. His conclusion: “The club currently has no prospects!”
