Palestinian president says Hamas will have no role in governing postwar Gaza

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 25, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

RAMALLAH, west Bank (AP) -⁤ Palestinian President Mahmoud ‍Abbas affirmed that Hamas will not be involved in the governance ⁤of⁣ Gaza following the conclusion of the ongoing ⁣conflict with Israel, stating the Palestinian Authority is ⁣prepared to assume duty for the‍ territory. Abbas addressed the international community,‍ thanking nations that have recognized ⁣Palestinian statehood and urging‍ further support for Palestinian rights.

Abbas’s ⁢remarks⁤ come as Israel’s military campaign in Gaza continues, triggered by the Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on⁢ Israel⁣ that resulted in approximately 1,200 deaths ⁣and the capture of 251 hostages, 48 of whom remain in Gaza, with ⁢around 20⁢ believed to be alive. The⁣ Gaza Health Ministry reports over 35,000 Palestinians have been killed and ‍more than 167,000 wounded in Gaza since the start of the conflict, with women and children⁤ comprising roughly half of the fatalities. Over 90% of housing in Gaza has been ‍destroyed, displacing more ‍than 2 million people, and famine has been declared in northern gaza.

Abbas emphasized the ‌need for international action to secure Palestinian rights,⁢ including ‍an end to the occupation and freedom from what he described as Israeli political influence. He expressed hope that ⁣the⁤ recent recognition of Palestinian statehood by France, the U.K.,⁢ and Canada woudl inspire other nations to follow suit, but stressed ⁤that‍ recognition alone is ⁤insufficient.⁢

“The time has come for the international community to do right by ⁤the Palestinian people,⁣ so that they may obtain thier rights for ⁤their legitimate rights ⁢to be rid of the occupation,” Abbas said. He concluded with a message of resilience to the Palestinian people, vowing they would not abandon their homeland.

Israel Attacks Gaza Health Center, Raising Concerns Over Aid and Hospitals

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 23, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

GAZA CITY,Gaza Strip (AP) – An Israeli airstrike destroyed a health facility in the central Samer area of Gaza city following an evacuation order, according to reports from the area and confirmed by U.N. agencies and aid groups. The incident occurred amid Israel’s ongoing offensive aimed at occupying Gaza City, a territory already heavily damaged by previous military actions.

The destruction of the health center adds to the rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, where more than 300,000 people have fled Gaza City in recent weeks under israeli orders to move south, though an estimated 700,000 remain. The world’s leading authority on hunger crises stated last month that Israel’s blockade and offensive had already pushed Gaza City into famine. This latest strike further restricts access to already scarce medical care for the remaining population.Israel launched its major offensive earlier this month, seeking to pressure Hamas into surrendering and returning the 48 hostages taken during the Oct. 7,2023,attack that initiated the conflict. Israel believes approximately 20 of the captives are still alive.

The Gaza Health Ministry, part of the Hamas-run government, reports at least 65,382 Palestinians have been killed in the war, though it does not differentiate between civilians and combatants. These figures are considered the most reliable estimate of wartime casualties by the U.N. and many independent experts. Hamas-led militants killed approximately 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducted 251 during the Oct. 7 attack; most of the captives have as been released through ceasefires or other agreements.

Title: France Recognizes Palestinian Statehood Amid Gaza War

France Formally Recognizes Palestinian Statehood in UN Vote

UNITED ⁣NATIONS – France on Tuesday formally recognized the State of Palestine in a United Nations General assembly vote,⁣ signaling a renewed push for a two-state solution too ⁤the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The resolution passed with 143 votes in favor, ⁤9 against, and 15 abstentions.

This move comes amid escalating tensions in the region and stalled peace negotiations, underscoring international frustration with the ongoing impasse. The recognition is largely symbolic, as it doesn’t ‌alter the existing political realities on the ground, but it carries meaningful weight as a diplomatic statement of support for Palestinian statehood and a potential⁢ future peace agreement. The ⁤decision impacts millions of Palestinians living under occupation and influences the broader geopolitical landscape of the Middle East, possibly reshaping future negotiations and international efforts ⁢to resolve the decades-long conflict.

Israel has consistently maintained that the Palestinian Authority is not fully committed‌ to peace and accuses it of inciting militancy. Many Palestinians, though, view their own leadership in⁢ the ⁤West Bank as corrupt and increasingly‌ autocratic.

Hamas, which won the 2006 Palestinian national elections, has at times hinted at accepting a ‍state based on the 1967 borders, but remains formally committed to a Palestinian state encompassing ‍all territory between the Mediterranean Sea⁣ and the Jordan River, including present-day Israel.

peace talks between Israelis and ⁢Palestinians, last brokered by⁣ the United States ⁣in the early 1990s, repeatedly stalled due to violence and Israel’s continued expansion⁢ of settlements in the West Bank. Substantive peace negotiations ‍have been absent as⁣ Benjamin‍ Netanyahu returned to office in 2009.

Advocates for a two-state solution argue that without the establishment of a Palestinian state, Israel faces a difficult choice: maintaining the status quo ‍of military occupation without equal rights for Palestinians, or transitioning to a binational state that could jeopardize its jewish majority.

UN Leaders Face Dire Challenges at Turbulent Global Summit

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 22, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

UNITED NATIONS – World leaders gathered at the United Nations this week amid escalating global crises and a looming financial shortfall for the organization itself, raising questions about its future effectiveness. The annual General Assembly convened as conflicts rage in Sudan, Somalia, and Haiti, while progress toward gender equality stalls, and the UN faces important budget cuts.

The assembly takes place at a critical juncture. War in sudan, sparked by a power struggle between rival military factions, has triggered the world’s worst displacement crisis. In Somalia, the extremist group Al-Shabab continues to exert influence. Haiti remains largely under the control of gangs, who dominate over 90% of the capital and are expanding their reach. Concurrently, the UN is grappling with a mandated 15% reduction in its 2026 regular operating budget – a cut to $3.2 billion – and a 19% reduction in staff positions, totaling 2,681 posts, due to funding cuts from the U.S. and other nations.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres is using the assembly to advocate for reforms aimed at making the UN more responsive to current global challenges. He has warned that, at the current rate, achieving gender equality – a key goal of the 1995 Beijing women’s conference, which is being commemorated this week on its 30th anniversary – is 300 years away.

Richard Gowan, a UN expert, acknowledged the organization is facing “an extraordinarily difficult period” and will inevitably have to shrink and adapt. While he doesn’t anticipate nations abandoning the UN, he noted its influence on peace and security issues has diminished. “The U.N.’s resonance on peace and security issues is unquestionably not what it was,” Gowan said, “but I think that the organization will continue to muddle through.”

The Associated Press’s Edith M. Lederer has covered international affairs at the UN for over five decades.

UK, Australia and Canada recognize a Palestinian state

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor September 22, 2025
written by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor

LONDON ‌- In a coordinated diplomatic move, the⁢ United⁣ Kingdom, Australia, ‌and Canada announced today their ⁣recognition of a Palestinian state,⁢ escalating ⁢international ⁤pressure on Israel amid its ‌ongoing conflict with‌ Hamas and stalled peace negotiations. the decisions, revealed Tuesday, represent a⁢ significant shift in‍ policy for⁤ all three nations and a renewed push for a two-state solution.

The recognition comes⁣ as the ⁤humanitarian situation in Gaza deteriorates, with more than 65,000 people reported killed, ‍and a famine declared ⁢in Gaza City. It also follows a recent United ⁢Nations Human⁤ Rights Council report concluding that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza-a charge ⁤Israel‌ has vehemently rejected as “distorted and false.” The move is intended ⁤to reaffirm commitment⁤ to a long-term resolution ‌of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, a goal⁤ increasingly threatened by expanding Israeli settlements in⁤ the West Bank, land Palestinians claim for a future state.

The U.K.’s Foreign ⁤Secretary David Cameron stated the recognition of Palestinian statehood is “an affirmation of the right of the palestinian people to self-determination.” Australia’s Foreign Minister Penny Wong‍ echoed⁤ this sentiment, emphasizing the decision was made after careful consideration and is‌ in line with ‌a two-state solution. Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly said the recognition is a step towards ⁣achieving lasting peace.

The timing⁣ of the announcements is also linked to growing international frustration with Israel’s continued expansion of settlements in the West Bank,‌ considered illegal under international law by much‌ of the ‍world. Olivia‌ O’sullivan, Director of the U.K. in the World Program at Chatham House, explained the move “has symbolic and ‍historic weight, makes clear the U.K.’s⁤ concerns about the survival of a two-state solution, and is intended‌ to keep that ⁣goal relevant and alive.”

While the practical implications of ⁢recognizing a‌ Palestinian state are limited-Palestine does not have full control over its territory-the symbolic⁣ weight is substantial. The international community largely⁤ views the creation ⁤of a Palestinian state alongside ‌Israel as the only realistic path to a ⁣lasting resolution of the‍ conflict.

The announcements were made independently by each country, but coordinated to‌ maximize impact. Associated Press ⁢writers Jill Lawless in London and‍ Josef Federman in Jerusalem contributed to this report.

Israel Intensifies Gaza City Strikes, Hospital Reports Dozens Dead

Gaza City – Israel⁢ ramped up airstrikes on ⁢Gaza City overnight, with teh Al-Ahli Arab Hospital reporting at least 32 Palestinians were killed, according to‍ hospital officials. The strikes targeted areas near the hospital and other civilian infrastructure, intensifying ⁣a conflict sparked by Hamas‘s October 7th attack⁣ on Israel.⁣

The ⁣escalation comes ⁢as Israel continues it’s military response to the Hamas incursion, which resulted in over 1,400 Israeli deaths and the taking of over 200 ‌hostages.Palestinian authorities report over 6,600 deaths in Gaza since the‌ conflict began,‍ a figure that ‌includes those killed in the latest strikes.

The strikes are focused ‌on dismantling Hamas infrastructure and capabilities within Gaza. ⁢israel has maintained that it takes steps⁢ to avoid civilian casualties, but the high⁢ death toll ‌and ⁣damage to civilian areas have ‌drawn international concern.

The conflict has also led to a severe humanitarian crisis in⁢ Gaza, with limited access to food, water, and medical supplies. International ‍organizations are calling for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid to the region.
