Lassa Fever: A Regional Crisis Demands Cooperation

Teh 2nd ECOWAS International Conference on Lassa Fever (Elfic 2025) will be held in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, from September 8-11, 2025, under the theme “Beyond the borders: strengthening regional cooperation to combat Lassa fever and emerging infectious diseases.”
This serious illness can severely damage vital organs like the liver, spleen, and kidneys, and is associated with high rates of illness and death. Currently, ther are no approved vaccines or antiviral treatments, leading to devastating socio-economic consequences, particularly for vulnerable rural communities.
Elfic 2025, organized by the West African Health Organization (OOAS) and its partners, aims to bridge the gap between research and action. The conference will serve as a platform for scientists, policymakers, and communities to discuss the latest scientific advancements, innovative control strategies, and collaborative approaches to prevent, diagnose, and treat Lassa fever.Key conference highlights include:
Inaugural Ceremony: Presided over by Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, featuring speeches and high-level panels.
Technical Workshops: Focusing on vaccine and diagnostic tool development,community engagement,epidemic preparedness,and cross-border collaboration.
Ministerial Dialog: Co-chaired by Dr. Melchior Athanase JC Aïssi (OOAS Director General), Pr Muhammad Ali Pate (Nigeria’s Minister of Health and Social Protection), and Pierre N’Gou Dimba (Ivorian Minister of Health, public Hygiene and Universal Health Coverage).
Exhibitions & Networking: Showcasing innovations from research institutions, NGOs, and the private sector to foster regional and international cooperation.
