COVID-19 vaccine Access Expands in Pennsylvania and New Jersey Following Federal Guidance Delays
HARRISBURG, PA & TRENTON,โ NJ – Residentsโข in Pennsylvania and New Jerseyโ now have broader access to updated โคCOVID-19 vaccines as state officialsโ moved to bypass delays in federal immunization โคrecommendations, addressing confusion among โขthe publicโ and pharmacies. The actions come after the FDA approved updatedโ COVID-19 shotsโ but limited โฃaccessโค for some children and adults, leaving many unsure โฃabout eligibility and insurance coverage.
Pharmacies in both states reported a surge โฃin inquiries from individuals eager to receive the new vaccines but uncertain if they qualified or if their insurance โwould cover the cost. โค”Thereโ was a lot of people calling confused, as if they weren’tโข sureโ if they were allowed toโ get the vaccine, also they weren’t sure if theโ insurance would cover the vaccine,” said Mayank amin, owner of Skippack Pharmacy in โPennsylvania.
In Pennsylvania, the state board of pharmacy voted during an emergency โคmeeting to allow pharmacists to follow vaccine recommendations from trusted authorities like the โฃAmerican Academy of Pediatrics โand the American Academy of Family Physicians, rather than waiting for guidance โfrom the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP),โค whose next meeting wasn’t scheduled โuntilโ October.โ
“Pharmacies nowโข can administer these vaccines toโ many more patients who โฃwant these vaccines this fall,”โ said Rob Frankil, executive director of the Philadelphia Association of Retail Druggists. “That’s making โavailable these vaccines for people who want them so they can makeโค their ownโค choice, and at the end of the day, that’s going to keep โฃthe population healthier.”
pharmacists across Pennsylvania have already seen a positive response. “Sinceโข the vaccine was released,we’ve done a lot of doses,”โ reportedโ Marc Ost of Eric’s Rx Shoppe. He emphasizedโ the role ofโ community pharmacies as trusted healthcare providers, โคstating their goalโข is “to be able to provide โฃvaccines to those whoโค want it, but also โin a lot ofโค situations in โschools and long-term care โfacilities โขto thoseโฃ that โฃneed it and are โrequiredโฃ to get it.” amin added that his pharmacy began administering Moderna and Pfizer vaccines “right afterโ the announcement came out,” followingโค a high volume of patient calls.
New Jersey health officials echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that โฃwhileโข the state-level โฃactions โimprove access, insurance coverage isn’t guaranteed acrossโฃ all plans. However, officials believeโ the measures will simplify immunization for those seeking the vaccine. “The goal of this order is to make sure anybody โฃwho chooses to get a COVID-19 vaccineโข can get one,”โ stated a New Jersey healthโ official, identified as Brown.
