Illinois Firefighters Return After Responding to Devastating Texas Floods
A team of 39 firefighters from across Illinois, part of the MABAS Illinois rescue contingent, has returned home after assisting in the aftermath of catastrophic flooding in Texas. The firefighters described the conditions as the “worst I’ve ever seen,” emphasizing that images and videos could not fully convey the scale of the devastation.
The deployment came as Texas grappled with the severe impact of massive flooding, which, as of Saturday, had resulted in 137 reported deaths, with two individuals still unaccounted for. The Illinois team navigated challenging terrain, including the Guadalupe River, sharing photos that illustrated the difficult conditions they encountered.
For many of the responders, the experience offered a profound shift in viewpoint. “It was one of the most humbling and amazing experiences I’ve had,” shared Bess Vlahakis of the Park Forest Fire Department. Retired firefighter Humza reflected on the importance of cherishing time with loved ones, stating, “Remembering to spend time have quality moments with yoru loved ones because at the end of the day you don’t have control over what comes next.”
Upon their return to the station in Wheeling on Saturday, the firefighters were met with emotional reunions, including signs, cheers, and numerous hugs from family members. Charlotte richie, a family member, expressed her anticipation for simple domestic moments, saying, “I’m really looking forward to going on the boat, probably not tonight, but having a family dinner again.” Crew member Jim Loehman acknowledged the crucial role of family support, noting, “They’re the ones really supporting us. Without them at home supporting us to be able to work the mission we’re doing, this doesn’t happen.”
The team expressed gratitude for their safe return and the possibility to rest and recuperate before resuming their duties at their respective local fire departments.
