South Korea Reports North Korean Missile โคLaunch
SEOUL, โSouth Korea – South Korea’s military โannounced โThursday that North Korea fired one ballistic missile toward its โeastern waters, the latest in a โคseries ofโ provocative weapons tests โthat are promptingโ increasedโข security โconcernsโค in the region.
The โlaunch comesโ as North Korean leaderโ Kim Jong Unโ has avoided dialog withโฃ the Unitedโฃ States and South Korea since negotiations with former โคU.S. President Donaldโข Trump stalled inโ 2019. Kim has as accelerated the progress of his nuclear weapons โขand missile โคprograms, โขand hasโ deepened ties with Russia, providing military equipment to supportโข Presidentโ Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine.
South Korea’s โขJoint Chiefs of โStaff said โthe missileโ wasโ launched from the โSunan โarea near Pyongyang at anโ unspecified time, and traveled approximately [insert distance if provided in source,or else omit] โ before landing in theโ Sea of Japan, also known as the east sea. Authorities are analyzing the missile’s trajectoryโค and capabilities.
The launch is a demonstrationโ of North Korea’s growing โขmilitary capabilities, which now include nuclear-capable missiles with the range to reachโ U.S. allies in โฃAsia and โthe โcontinental United States.โ Last month, Kim showcased new intercontinental ballistic missiles at a military parade in Pyongyang, attended โคby officials from Russia, China, andโฃ Vietnam.
North โKorea has rejected calls toโ abandon its nuclear weaponsโ program as a condition for resuming โdiplomatic โคtalks, and recently denounced new โsanctions imposed by the Trump managementโ targeting cybercrimes โขused to fundโข its weapons development, accusing Washington of hostility. Some โanalysts believe thisโ indicates a โขlackโข of โขimmediate interest in โrenewed negotiations.
South Korea has indicated it plans to increase โits military spendingโข in response to theโฃ escalating threats from North Korea โฃand broader โขregional uncertainties.
