ATHENS,Greece (AP) – Two migrants,a man โคand a boy, diedโข Tuesday whenโ a โspeedboat โcarrying โmigrants capsized near the Greek islandโ of Rhodes during an attempted evasionโฃ of the Greek โคcoast guard. Sixteen other people – โ12 men and four women – โwere rescued from โthe sea.
The โincident underscores the continued dangers faced by migrants attempting to reach Europe, notably via the Aegean Sea. Greece remains โaโค primary entry point into the European Union for those fleeing conflict and โขpoverty in the Middle East, Africa, and Asia,โฃ and perilousโฃ sea crossings โคin overcrowded and โขoftenโ unseaworthy vessels frequently result in tragedy.โฃ
According to the coast guard, a patrol vessel โencountered โฃthe speedboat heading toward Rhodes in the early hours of Tuesday. Whenโ the speedboat failed โto respondโข to signals to โstop, the patrol vessel initiated a โchase. โขThe coast guardโฃ stated โฃthe speedboat then performed “dangerous maneuvers” in an attempt to escape, ultimately overturning andโข throwingโ all those aboard intoโ the water.
Followingโ the capsizing, twoโข patrol boats recovered the survivors and the bodies โof the deceased. Authorities arrested three of the survivors – a 30-year-old Azerbaijani โnational and two Armenian nationals, aged โ31 and 32 – on suspicion of migrant โฃsmuggling. They face chargesโฃ including causing a shipwreck, negligent homicide, and violating immigration laws.
The tragedy follows a similar incident last week, where four people, including a child, โdied after a migrant boat sank off โฃtheโ island of Lesbos. โThirty-four individuals survived that sinking, reaching shore and later being taken into police โcustody.
