Minneapolis,โฃ MN – Hundreds gathered today to celebrateโค theโ life of 10-year-old Harper Rose Merkel, one of two people killed โin the August 27th shooting at the Church of the Annunciation in Minneapolis. โฃThe service, filled with both grief โคand remembrance, highlightedโข Harper’s vibrant spirit and the community’s shared pain in the wake of the tragedy.
The shooting, which alsoโค injured 21 others, occurredโค during a Mass when a 23-year-old former student, identified as Robin Westman, openedโฃ fire through the โchurch’sโ windows, discharging over a hundred rounds before being found dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot. The event โhasโค reignited conversations about โคgun violence, particularly its impact on children and the need for community healing.
During โthe celebration of life, Harper’s mother, โJackie Flavin, shared how the community’s support โhadโ been โa lifeline for her family during their darkest โhours, describing a feeling of being lifted from “the bottom of an ocean where it’s pitch black andโฃ the pressure is crushing.” โShe โคremembered Harper’s loveโ for dogs and her aspiration to become a veterinarian, emphasizing the lessons her daughterโข taught them about “how to be aโ light โin the โขdark.”
Flavin further described โขHarper as someone who embraced her individuality. “She had her own point of view, herโค own sense of โฃstyle, โขher own way of being. She didn’t wait for permission. She didn’t โwater herself down,” Flavin said.”And she really taught us โคtoโ show up exactly as you are.” She alsoโค affectionately โcalled Harper “extra in the very โbest way,” notingโ herโ daughter’s penchant โฃfor choosing theโ best options and always wanting “the extra scoop.”
Theโ service also acknowledged the broader context of gun violence, coming just four days after the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirkโข at Utah Valley University. Speakers expressed frustration โฃthat shootings, especially those impacting schoolchildren, continue to occur.
Rabbi Jason Rodich, an โextended familyโ member, urged attendees to move โbeyond the divisiveness of social media and embrace connection. โ”Turn just a littleโข to the warm soul beside โyou,” โhe said. “Do it for Harper. Do it for you.”
Fletcher Merkel was the othre fatality in the shooting. The Minneapolis โcommunityโ continues to grapple with the โขaftermath of the event and seeks waysโ to supportโ those affected โand โprevent future tragedies.
