Los โAngeles County Reports measles-Related Death in School-Age โChild
A school-age child in Los Angeles County has died from subacute sclerosing โpanencephalitis (SSPE), aโ rare and fatal complication โฃof measles, healthโข officials announced Thursday. Teh child was infected with measles in infancy, before being eligible for vaccination.
This deathโ underscores the enduring risks posed โby measles, even years after initial infection,โค and arrives โduringโ the worst U.S. measles outbreak โฃin over three โdecades. While measles โคisโฃ highly preventable throughโ vaccination, declining โimmunization rates are fuelingโฃ a resurgence of โthe virusโฃ and increasing the potential for severe, long-term consequences likeโข SSPE, especially among vulnerable populations such as infants.
According to the Los โคAngelesโข County Department ofโ Public Health, SSPE causes โprogressive brain damage and is โขalmost always fatal. The condition develops in approximately 1โข inโค 10,000 people whoโฃ contract โmeasles, but the โคrisk increases to 1 in 600โ forโข infants.
“This case is aโ painful reminderโค of how dangerous measles can be, especially for our most vulnerable community members,” said Dr. Muntu Davis, Los Angeles โขCounty health officer. “Infants too young to be vaccinated rely on all of us to help protect them through community โimmunity.”
Theโ Centers for Diseaseโค Control andโข Prevention has confirmed 1,454 measles โคcases in the U.S. as of tuesday, with three fatalities reported nationwide. This โmarks โคthe highest number of cases since 1994.
The measles, โฃmumps, and rubellaโค (MMR) vaccine is 97% โeffective inโข preventing measles after two doses. The CDC recommends children โreceive their first dose ofโ the MMR vaccine between 12 and 15 months ofโฃ age, and a second dose between 4 and 6 years old.
