Ukraine War: Drone Attacks Disrupt Moscow Flights, Strikes Hit Kyiv & Lviv

Multiple Moscow airports suspended flights for several hours on Sunday, February 22, 2026, following reports of a drone attack on the Russian capital. Russia’s aviation authority, Rosaviatsiya, announced the restrictions, citing security concerns.

Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin stated that the city’s defenses had intercepted 31 drones, according to Interfax news agency. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported downing nearly 300 Ukrainian drones across the country. Sobyanin, who has served as the Mayor of Moscow since 2010, previously held positions as Governor of Tyumen Oblast, Head of the Presidential Administration, and Deputy Prime Minister of Russia, according to Wikipedia.

The disruptions affected operations at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, Sheremetyevo, and Zhukovsky airports. Flight schedules were significantly impacted, with numerous delays and cancellations reported.

Ukraine’s military claimed to have launched 50 rockets and 297 drones in a nighttime attack, alleging that Russian air defenses intercepted 33 rockets and 274 drones. Ukrainian officials stated the attack targeted energy infrastructure, specifically in the Kyiv region, the Black Sea port of Odessa, and central Ukraine. At least one person was injured in Kyiv, according to Regional Governor Mykola Kalashnyk, with damage reported across five city districts. Oleh Kiper, the Governor of Odessa, reported that fires broke out during the attack but were subsequently extinguished.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha, writing on X, asserted that Russia was “undermining diplomacy” with these “terrorist large-scale attacks” and called for increased international sanctions against Moscow. No immediate statement was released by Russian authorities.

In the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, a series of explosions resulted in the death of one police officer and injuries to several other security personnel, according to local media reports. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi stated that 14 people were hospitalized following the explosions, describing the incident as a “terrorist attack.” The city is located near the Polish border, approximately 50 kilometers from the European Union.

The attacks arrive as Sergey Sobyanin approaches 16 years as Mayor of Moscow, a period marked by both modernization efforts and criticism regarding political freedoms, as reported by the Moskauer Deutsche Zeitung. He was initially appointed to the position in 2010 following the dismissal of Yury Luzhkov and subsequently re-elected in 2013, 2018, and 2023.

Ukraine Conflict: Zelenskyy Rejects Donbass Concessions, NATO Dismisses Russian Advances

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 14, 2026

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy firmly rejected any concessions regarding the Donbas region during an appearance at the Munich Security Conference on Saturday, stating that asking residents to abandon their homes would be a “great idea” only to “the big bosses.” The statement came as U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio abruptly cancelled a planned meeting with European counterparts on the sidelines of the conference, a move described as “crazy” by European officials.

Zelenskyy’s comments addressed persistent Russian demands for Ukraine to cede control of the Donbas, areas of Donetsk and Luhansk currently under Kyiv’s control. He framed the suggestion as a callous disregard for the approximately 200,000 Ukrainian citizens still residing in those regions. “I should go to them, to every apartment, knock and say: Seem, a great idea! Forget your home, forget everything, your relatives, leave your home, because that is the great idea of the big bosses,” Zelenskyy said, according to a report from the Ukrainian news portal Politico.

The cancellation of Rubio’s meeting, initially scheduled with representatives from Germany, Finland, Poland, and the European Union Commission, adds to the diplomatic complexities surrounding the ongoing conflict. The Financial Times first reported the cancellation, citing U.S. Sources. The abrupt change in plans occurred as Rubio prepared to deliver a keynote address at the conference.

NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte offered a stark assessment of Russia’s military progress, comparing its advance in Ukraine to that of a “garden snail.” Rutte also highlighted the significant casualties sustained by Russian forces, claiming that 35,000 soldiers were killed in December alone, followed by another 30,000 in January. “These are the facts,” Rutte stated, emphasizing the need for continued support for Ukraine. “That is why we must maintain Ukraine strong, because we see that they are using our support in the best possible way.”

In a separate development, Zelenskyy awarded a state order to Wladyslaw Heraskewytsch, a Ukrainian skeleton racer who was disqualified from the Winter Olympics. The award recognizes Heraskewytsch despite his exclusion from the games. A concert intended as a show of U.S.-Ukrainian solidarity is planned, with further performances scheduled in the coming weeks, according to organizer Tetiana Marosowa.
