Stop Wasting Money: 6 Household Items You Should Buy Less Of

by Lucas Fernandez – World Editor February 24, 2026

Consumers are being warned to reconsider purchases of six common household items as their value depreciates rapidly, effectively “burning money” according to financial experts. The warning, initially reported by U.S. Financial news outlets and gaining traction in Taiwan, comes as concerns mount over inflationary pressures and cost of living increases.

The advice centers on recognizing which purchases are worth investing in and which can be substituted with more affordable options. Financial expert Melanie Musson suggests that identifying these distinctions can save consumers thousands of dollars annually. “The key isn’t to constantly compress your lifestyle, but to identify what things are worth spending money on and what things you don’t need to buy expensive versions of,” Musson stated, according to reporting from the United Daily News.

High-end smartphones are identified as a particularly poor investment. A 2024 report by Compare and Recycle indicated that even major brands experience steep depreciation. The iPhone 15 series, for example, lost over 55% of its value within the first year of release, a steeper decline than previous models. Android phones often fare worse due to intense competition in the market. The rapid pace of technological advancement and the aging of batteries contribute to this swift devaluation.

“Fast fashion” furniture, requiring self-assembly, also presents a significant financial drain. These items, often constructed from materials like particleboard or MDF, have limited resale value. Their structural integrity is compromised by disassembly or relocation. Unless the furniture is made of solid wood, it’s likely to be sold at a substantial loss when upgrading.

Jewelry, particularly purchased from retail jewelry stores, is another item flagged for its poor investment potential. The high retail markups on items like diamond rings mean that resale value typically falls between 20% and 40% of the original purchase price. Resellers primarily value the raw materials, disregarding brand and design premiums.

The report also highlights the importance of considering alternatives for sunglasses. The American Academy of Ophthalmology asserts that any sunglasses with “100% UV protection” – even those available at drugstores for as little as $2700 NTD (approximately $85 USD) – effectively protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet radiation. Musson recommends considering retailers like Costco, where the same sunglasses may be available at significantly lower prices than department stores.

Large-packaged kitchen staples, over-the-counter medications, out-of-season decorations, affordable beauty and household products, and even bottled water are also identified as areas where consumers can save money by opting for less expensive alternatives. The advice comes amid reports that 83% of Americans are experiencing increased financial stress due to inflation, rising prices, and economic uncertainty, according to a LifeStance survey.
