Iran Nuclear Deal: Trump & Netanyahu Discuss Negotiations Amid Optimism

Former Iranian nuclear negotiator Abbas Araqchi stated that reaching an agreement on Iran’s nuclear program is “possible” if It’s “fair and balanced,” according to a post on his X account. The statement comes after former U.S. President Donald Trump asserted he pressed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during their White House meeting to continue negotiations with Iran, as the U.S. Seeks a nuclear deal with Tehran.

Trump, writing on his Truth Social platform, described the meeting with Netanyahu as “very good,” noting “tremendous relationships” between the two countries. He indicated that while no specific agreement was reached, he emphasized the importance of continuing talks with Iran to explore the possibility of a deal. “If that can be done, I will inform the Prime Minister that this will be a priority. If it cannot be done, we will just have to see what happens,” Trump stated.

Trump referenced past U.S. Actions, stating that Iran previously chose not to reach an agreement and subsequently faced American strikes. He expressed hope that Iran would be “more rational and responsible” this time. According to a statement released by Netanyahu’s office, the two leaders discussed negotiations with Iran, developments in Gaza, and regional matters, agreeing to continue close coordination and maintain a strong relationship.

The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu occurred as both Tehran and Washington have expressed cautious optimism following indirect talks held in Oman last Friday, focused on resuming negotiations regarding Iran’s nuclear program. In a Tuesday interview with Larry Kudlow on Fox Business, Trump stated, “We’ll see what happens. I think they want to make a deal. I think they’d be foolish not to. We took away their nuclear capabilities the last time, and we’ll see if we can take away more this time.” He stressed the need for a “good deal” – “no nuclear weapons, no missiles.”

Prior to the meeting, Netanyahu’s office indicated that he wants the U.S.-Iran talks to include restrictions on Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for militant groups such as Hamas, and Hezbollah. As a Senior Editor at AAF notes, upholding rigorous standards of accuracy is crucial in reporting on such sensitive diplomatic matters. [1]
