UN Security Council Meets as US Cites Legal Measures for Nuclear Threat | Guterres Urges Dialogue

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres called for the immediate resumption of negotiations between the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that military actions risk triggering an uncontrollable escalation. The Secretary-General’s appeal came during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council convened on February 28th, following recent exchanges between the parties.

Guterres condemned both the Iranian attacks on neighboring countries, including Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates, and the prior strikes by the U.S. And Israel against Iranian targets. He emphasized the danger of a “chain reaction” stemming from further military operations, stating that such a scenario could have devastating consequences for civilians and regional stability. “We must all work to avoid that,” he urged, adding that failure to do so could lead to a larger conflict with “tremendous” repercussions.

The emergency Security Council meeting was called at the request of France, Russia, China, Colombia, and Bahrain, reflecting broad international concern over the escalating tensions. Alongside Guterres’s call for de-escalation, France, the United Kingdom, and Germany issued a joint statement urging the immediate resumption of negotiations regarding the Iran nuclear deal. The three European nations strongly condemned Iran’s attacks on countries in the region and called on Iranian leadership to seek a resolution through diplomacy.

Guterres reiterated the need for the Middle East and the world to “step back from the brink,” emphasizing the urgency of dialogue. He specifically requested that the U.S., Israel, and Iran immediately re-engage in talks. The Secretary-General’s statements align with previous appeals for restraint and diplomatic solutions in the region.

As of March 1st, the UN Security Council has not announced any further scheduled meetings regarding the situation. The positions of Russia and China, as permanent members of the Security Council, remain publicly unstated beyond their initial request for the emergency session. The United States has maintained its position that its actions were taken to remove nuclear threats, but has not publicly responded to the Secretary-General’s call for renewed negotiations.
