Tadej Pogacar Wins Milan-San Remo 2024: Results & Reactions
Tadej Pogačar of UAE Team Emirates secured victory in the 2026 Milan-San Remo cycling race on Saturday, finishing with a time of 6:35:49, narrowly defeating Britain’s Thomas Pidcock in a sprint finish. A key component of Pogačar’s success was the support of his teammate, Mexican cyclist Isaac del Toro.
Del Toro played a crucial role after Pogačar suffered a fall mid-race. According to reports, Del Toro took the lead of the UAE Emirates team and positioned Pogačar for a renewed attack, effectively mitigating the impact of the incident. “Brandon e Isaac hicieron el resto en la Cipressa. Hoy, si no hay equipo, probablemente me retiraría de la carrera,” Pogačar stated, acknowledging the vital support from Del Toro and another teammate.
While Pogačar battled Pidcock for the lead, Del Toro focused on maintaining momentum and protecting his team leader. He accelerated on the Cipressa climb, a strategic move that helped to narrow the field of competitors and set the stage for Pogačar’s final push. While Del Toro finished 110th with a time of 6:39:50, his efforts were instrumental in securing the win for UAE Team Emirates.
This marks the third victory for the UAE Team Emirates in 2026 and Pogačar’s first Milan-San Remo title. Del Toro’s performance exemplifies his role as a dedicated gregario, prioritizing team success over individual placement. He demonstrated “disciplina táctica y compromiso colectivo,” according to reports, sacrificing his own chances to benefit the team’s primary contender.
Del Toro is scheduled to resume competition at the Itzulia Basque Country, beginning on April 6th, as preparation for his debut in the Tour de France, which starts on July 4th. He has already secured two victories this year prior to the Milan-San Remo race.
