Tadej Pogačar etched his name further into cycling history, claiming a record-breaking fifth consecutive victory at Il Lombardia on Saturday. The Slovenian star completed the 258.2km race from Como to Bergamo in a blistering solo attack, finishing 51 seconds ahead of the chasing pack and securing his tenth career Monument win.
Pogačar’s dominant performance solidifies his status as one of the sport’s most formidable riders. Il Lombardia, known for its challenging climbs and unpredictable conditions, is widely considered one of cycling’s most prestigious one-day races – a ‘Monument’ of the sport. This win not only extends Pogačar’s unparalleled reign over the Italian classic but also underscores his remarkable versatility and tactical acumen, positioning him as a key favorite for major upcoming races and continuing a period of dominance rarely seen in professional cycling.
The decisive move came on the ascent of the Colle Gallino wiht approximately 20km remaining, where Pogačar launched a powerful attack that immediately distanced his rivals. He navigated the treacherous descent and final kilometers with composure, extending his led and ultimately crossing the finish line in Bergamo unchallenged.
Behind Pogačar, a group of contenders battled for the remaining podium spots. Matteo Trentin finished second, followed by Damiano Caruso in third.
Pogačar’s previous Il Lombardia victories came in 2021,2022,2023,and 2024. His ten Monument wins now include two Tour of Flanders titles (2023,2024),Liège-Bastogne-Liège (2024),Milan-San Remo (2024),and Paris-Roubaix (2024).
