Table Tennis: Ochsenhausen Coach to Play in Bundesliga Match Against Werder Bremen

February 11, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Werder Bremen is preparing for a challenging Bundesliga table tennis match against Ochsenhausen on Wednesday evening, complicated by the unexpected inclusion of the opposing team’s coach, Bogdan Pugna, in the playing lineup. The match, scheduled for 6:30 p.m. At the Klaus-Dieter-Fischer-Halle, sees Ochsenhausen fielding Pugna due to an acute shortage of available players.

Werder Bremen coach Cristian Tamas emphasized the importance of the week’s matches, stating, “Three games in six days – two of them away – these are crucial games for us.” Werder currently shares the top spot on the Bundesliga table with Borussia Düsseldorf, having recently secured a 3-0 victory against Grenzau. Tamas likewise indicated a desire for retribution, noting, “We still have a score to settle,” referencing a previous double defeat against Ochsenhausen in both league play and the cup competition earlier in the season.

The necessity of deploying Pugna stems from Ochsenhausen’s inability to field a full team. According to Pugna himself, “Of course I regret the situation. The plan wasn’t actually that I would have to pick up the bat myself again. What will be crucial is that the two guys who have to play win their games.” This isn’t the first time Pugna has been called upon to play in a competitive match. he previously appeared in a game against Fulda last season during Olympic star Dimitri Ovtcharov’s debut, conceding a traditional honorary point to his opponent.

While permitted under Bundesliga rules, the practice of a coach entering a match is generally frowned upon. Qiu Yu Meng, coach of Fulda, has also taken to the table on occasion, but with limited success against higher-ranked opponents like Werder’s Mattias Falck.

Ochsenhausen is hoping for strong performances from Shunsuke Togami and Andreas Levenko to secure a victory. Werder, however, intends to field its strongest lineup, including Mattias Falck, Kirill Gerassimenko, and Andrei Putuntica, in pursuit of a playoff berth. The team currently holds an eight-point lead over the first team outside of playoff contention. Tamas stated, “We don’t want to miss out on the play-offs,” adding, “But for that we need a few more wins.”

The match against Ochsenhausen represents an opportunity for Werder Bremen to further solidify its position in the league and avenge earlier losses. The outcome will be closely watched as teams vie for a place in the championship semi-finals.
