Tabitha Jussa Photography Exhibition Celebrates 30 Years of Maggie Centres
Thirty Years of Maggie’s Centres Documented in Liverpool
A new photography exhibition has opened at RIBA North in Liverpool to mark thirty years of Maggie’s cancer care centres. The display, titled ‘Just Come In’: 30 Years of Maggie’s Centres, runs until 29 November and documents the spaces where people affected by cancer receive free practical, emotional, and social support.
For three decades, these facilities have operated on a foundational ethos offering an open door and a welcoming environment for anyone facing a cancer diagnosis.
Tabitha Jussa Captures the Interplay of Place, People, and Time
Photographer Tabitha Jussa visited six Maggie’s centres across the United Kingdom to capture the relationship between visitors, staff, volunteers, and the physical buildings. Jussa noted that entering a centre instantly puts visitors at ease through a combination of thoughtful interior design, natural light, and welcoming spaces. The exhibition showcases large-scale pictures representing the interplay of place, people, and time within each facility, highlighting how specific architectural design and natural elements foster comfort and ease for visitors and staff.
Coffee-Based Developers and Botanical Cyanotypes
Beyond large-scale prints, Jussa worked with a 35mm film camera to capture granular details of the building fabrics, reflections, and textures. These film images were developed using a coffee-based developer to mirror the everyday gesture of staff offering visitors a cup of tea. Jussa also gathered foliage and flowers from the gardens of each centre to create cyanotype prints using natural daylight, alongside suspended silk panels dyed naturally using plant material collected on-site.
Public Access and Exhibition Schedule
The retrospective exhibition remains on public display at RIBA North in Liverpool until 29 November. The spaces continue to operate on the foundational ethos that inspired the project thirty years ago, offering an open door and a welcoming environment for anyone facing the challenges of a cancer diagnosis.
