T20 World Cup: India vs West Indies – Semifinal Race & Sanju Samson’s Rising Form

February 28, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

South Africa and England have secured their places in the semi-finals of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, leaving the final two spots open for contention as the Super Eights stage progresses. India and West Indies are locked in a tight race for the second semi-final berth in Group 1, even as Novel Zealand and Pakistan vie for the remaining position in Group 2.

South Africa confirmed their semi-final qualification after defeating both India and West Indies, and are now aiming to complete a perfect Super Eights record against Zimbabwe on Sunday. Their victories have been marked by dominant performances, including a nine-wicket win over the West Indies. Captain Aiden Markram’s unbeaten 82 was instrumental in their recent success, racing to a target of 177/1 in 16.1 overs after the West Indies posted 176/8.

The battle for the second spot in Group 1 comes down to the match between India and West Indies on Sunday. West Indies, despite their loss to South Africa, remain in contention due to a superior net run rate compared to India. A loss for India would eliminate them from the tournament. Both teams previously secured wins against Zimbabwe.

In Group 2, England have already qualified, leaving New Zealand and Pakistan to fight for the remaining semi-final place. The current standings indicate a close contest, with the outcome dependent on their remaining matches.

India’s recent 72-run victory over Zimbabwe has boosted their chances, fueled by a strong batting performance. Sanju Samson’s contribution has been particularly noteworthy, providing a much-needed boost to the top order. Samson expressed his gratitude for the enthusiastic support he received from fans in Chennai, describing the atmosphere as “special” and noting the unique energy he feels when playing there. He highlighted the unwavering support from fans as a significant factor in his performance.

Samson’s arrival at Chennai Super Kings was unexpected, facilitated by MS Dhoni’s intervention. While Dhoni is not expected to play all matches this season, speculation suggests he may assume the role of captain when not playing, with Samson potentially taking over in his absence. The support for Samson is expected to grow as he continues to play for CSK.

The match between India and West Indies on Sunday is crucial, with the winner securing a place in the semi-finals. West Indies currently hold a slight advantage in net run rate, meaning a rain-affected match could see them advance even without a win. The outcome will determine which team joins South Africa in the semi-final round.
