Syrian Army Takes Control of Al-Tanf Base After US Withdrawal | Syria-Iraq Border

February 13, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Syrian government forces have taken control of the Al-Tanf garrison following the withdrawal of U.S. Troops, according to multiple reports from regional news outlets. The transfer of control, confirmed by Syrian state media and independent sources, marks a significant shift in the geopolitical landscape of southern Syria, bordering both Iraq and Jordan.

The Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported that Syrian military units entered the base after the final departure of American forces. The move follows weeks of discussions between Syrian officials and the U.S.-led coalition regarding the future of the strategically important location. Al-Binaa newspaper, a Lebanese publication, also reported on the withdrawal, noting the logistical complexities involved in the handover.

Prior to the handover, Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas held discussions with a commander from the International Coalition, as reported by Rai al-Youm. The meeting focused on establishing a mechanism to “secure” the Al-Tanf base, suggesting a collaborative effort to maintain stability in the region following the U.S. Withdrawal. The details of this security arrangement remain undisclosed.

The Al-Tanf garrison has long been a focal point of regional tensions. It served as a training base for vetted Syrian rebels fighting against the Islamic State (ISIS) and, more broadly, against the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad. The U.S. Presence at Al-Tanf was also intended to counter Iranian influence in the area, a key strategic objective for Washington. The withdrawal raises questions about the future of counter-terrorism operations and the potential for increased Iranian activity in southern Syria.

The Syrian government’s assumption of control extends its reach along the border with Iraq and Jordan, areas that have seen intermittent clashes and smuggling activity. The implications for regional security are still unfolding, and neighboring countries are closely monitoring the situation. No immediate statements have been released by Jordanian or Iraqi officials regarding the change in control at Al-Tanf.
