Switzerland’s 2026 Olympic Hockey Dreams Crushed in Quarterfinals
Switzerland’s Olympic quarter-final loss to Finland on Tuesday, a 3-2 defeat in overtime after relinquishing a 2-0 lead, marks a continuation of frustration for the national men’s ice hockey team and head coach Patrick Fischer. The defeat brings an conclude to Switzerland’s run at the Milano Cortina 2026 Games, halting hopes for a first Olympic medal since 1948.
The loss echoes a similar outcome four years prior, at the 2022 Beijing Olympics, where Switzerland also fell to Finland in the quarter-finals, a 5-1 defeat. This year’s game saw a promising start for the Swiss, with goals from Damien Riat and Nino Niederreiter giving them a two-goal advantage. But, Finland rallied, ultimately forcing overtime and securing the win.
Fischer’s decade-long tenure as head coach has been characterized by a pursuit of consistent international success. Recent performances, including silver medals at the 2024 and 2025 IIHF World Championships, had fueled optimism heading into the Olympics. Twenty players on the 2026 Olympic roster contributed to those silver medal-winning teams.
The current Swiss squad, featuring NHL players such as Nashville Predators captain Roman Josi and New Jersey Devils forward Nico Hischier, was considered one of the most skilled assembled in the nation’s history. Alongside Josi and Hischier, the roster included Kevin Fiala of the Los Angeles Kings and Timo Meier of the New Jersey Devils, all with significant NHL power-play experience. The team’s power play finished with a tournament-leading 32.35 percent at the 2025 IIHF World Championships.
Goaltending was also expected to be a strength, with Vegas Golden Knights netminder Akira Schmid and veteran Reto Berra, currently playing in Fribourg, sharing duties alongside Leonardo Genoni, who was named Best Goaltender and MVP of the 2025 World Championships after recording 10 wins and five shutouts.
Switzerland was grouped in Group A with Canada, Czechia, and France for the Olympic tournament. Despite the team’s potential, as highlighted by Fischer’s emphasis on an attacking mindset – “go out there and attack” – they were unable to overcome Finland in the quarter-finals. The team had aimed to secure their first Olympic medal in almost 80 years, a goal that remains elusive.
The Swiss team now returns home, leaving the Olympic tournament without a medal. No immediate statement has been released regarding Fischer’s future with the national team.
