Switch 2: Redesign Confirmed with User-Replaceable Battery for Europe

March 22, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Nintendo is preparing a revision of its upcoming Switch 2 console specifically for the European Union, allowing consumers to replace the device’s battery with readily available tools, according to a report from Nikkei Asia.

The updated model will enable users to remove and replace the battery without requiring specialized equipment or posing a risk of damaging the console, Nikkei reported. This change is a direct response to new EU regulations designed to promote product repairability and reduce electronic waste. The regulations, which came into effect earlier this year, require manufacturers to make certain products, including electronics, more easily repairable by providing access to spare parts and repair manuals.

While the initial rollout of the easily repairable Switch 2 is slated for Europe, Nintendo has not yet indicated whether the design will be extended to other markets. The company will likely assess the demand and regulatory landscape in other regions before making a decision, sources familiar with the matter suggest.

The move comes as Nintendo prepares to launch its next-generation console, widely anticipated to be called the Switch 2, sometime in 2025. Details about the new console have been scarce, but industry analysts expect it to feature improved processing power and graphics capabilities compared to the current Switch model. The battery replacement feature adds a new dimension to the console’s design, addressing a growing consumer concern about the lifespan and environmental impact of electronic devices.

The EU’s push for greater product repairability is part of a broader effort to promote a circular economy and reduce waste. The regulations aim to empower consumers to extend the lifespan of their products, reducing the need for frequent replacements and minimizing environmental damage. Nintendo’s decision to offer a repairable Switch 2 model in Europe demonstrates the company’s responsiveness to these evolving regulatory requirements.

Nintendo has not yet commented on the Nikkei report, and the company’s official stance on the matter remains unclear. The company is expected to provide further details about the Switch 2, including its features and release date, in the coming months.
