Swedish Liberals Face Leadership Vote: Mohamsson’s SD Stance Divides Party

March 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Jönköping, Sweden – Cecilia Rönn, the Liberal Party’s economic policy spokesperson, has been nominated as a challenger to current party leader Simona Mohamsson, ahead of a crucial party meeting on Sunday. The nomination, initiated by leading Liberals in Jönköping County, comes as the party grapples with internal divisions over Mohamsson’s recent shift towards potential cooperation with the Sweden Democrats (SD).

Rönn acknowledged the nomination, expressing both gratitude and caution. “I am very grateful and honored by the support and feel a great deal of support around the country,” she told Aftonbladet. “At the same time, it is a huge responsibility, so I feel I need to consider and settle on that decision before I decide.”

The Liberal Party in Västerbotten County has also nominated Rönn, but indicated openness to supporting other potential challengers to Mohamsson. The upcoming landsmöte (party meeting) will center on a vote regarding Mohamsson’s proposed SD-line, effectively a referendum on the party’s future direction.

The nomination from Jönköping is not a unified position of the entire county party organization, but rather a move by a group of delegates and leading Liberals within the region. According to a press release, Rönn is seen as a leader capable of uniting members and representatives “in a situation where distrust of the current party leadership is massive.”

Liberal Party members in Västsverige (West Sweden) have publicly backed Mohamsson. Pär Gustafsson, the chairman of the regional party, stated via SMS that the board voted 9-5 to nominate Mohamsson, with five members abstaining from the decision.

In contrast, the Liberal Party in Stockholm County, the largest regional branch in the country, has chosen not to nominate any candidate. Ylva Mozis, the Stockholm County chairman, explained that the short timeframe for nominations made it impossible to put forward a candidate. “We had a board meeting tonight and decided not to nominate anyone at all. The short process we have been put in makes a nomination impossible,” she stated.

Rönn has previously expressed a desire for broader internal discussion within the party before Mohamsson solidified her stance on potential cooperation with the Sweden Democrats. “This is about our party’s strategic future, our members and our grassroots,” she said. “I would have liked us to be able to talk about the substantive issue instead of the personal issue, as that is what I think is most important.”

The deadline for nominations to the party’s electoral committee is Thursday at 7:00 PM local time. However, candidates can also be put forward by delegates at the landsmöte on Sunday. Jämställdhetsminister (Equality Minister) Nina Larsson (L) expressed confidence that the party leadership’s line would prevail and that Mohamsson would retain her position. She also acknowledged internal criticism, stating, “Of the people I have met and the conversations I have had, I experience that there is absolutely criticism and that there are those who do not support this, but I experience that there is a larger majority for it.”
