Sweden: Hospital Closures & Pediatric Ward Cuts

March 2, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The child ward at Sollefteå Hospital permanently closed its doors on January 30th, despite previously stated conditions for the closure not being met, according to reports from Allehanda.se.

The decision to permanently shutter the ward follows years of intermittent closures during weekends, summers and holidays. A key requirement for the permanent closure, the bolstering of ambulance services, had not been fulfilled, as reported by Jonny Dahlgren of Allehanda.se. Maria Strandberg, the health and medical director, confirmed the closure despite the lack of ambulance expansion.

The closure of the Sollefteå child ward is the latest development in a series of cuts to pediatric care in the region, prompting criticism from local leaders. Kerstin Kårén, writing in nordsverige.se, strongly criticized Region Västernorrland, its politicians, and officials for their handling of the ward’s closure and the associated risk assessments. Kårén’s commentary highlights concerns about access to care for children in the Ådalen region.

Further closures are anticipated, with Sveriges Radio reporting that the child psychiatric clinic is also under threat. The situation has sparked local concern, with questions raised about where patients will receive care. The February 27th closure of the ward was described as “sad and mournful” by staff at Sollefteå Hospital, according to Tidningen Ångermanland.

Anki Carlsson, a nurse who has worked at the ward for eight years, was reportedly deeply affected by the closure, as detailed in Tidningen Ångermanland. The decision to close the ward has been met with resistance, but the region’s leadership has moved forward with the plan, as reported by Sveriges Radio. The long-term implications for pediatric care in the area remain unclear.
