Sussex Cricket: Financial Crisis, ECB Bailout & 12-Point Deduction

March 25, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

Sussex County Cricket Club has been handed a 12-point deduction for the 2026 County Championship season after revealing a £1.3 million trading loss for 2025, with a further £1 million loss anticipated this year, according to details emerging from the club’s Annual General Meeting last night.

The severity of the club’s financial difficulties was outlined by Chief Executive Mark West, who stated the club had exhausted all available funds and was compelled to accept conditions imposed by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in exchange for a bailout. A key condition of the ECB’s support is that Sussex will require the governing body’s approval before signing any new players.

The financial woes have prompted resignations from members of the club’s board, who faced criticism from members regarding the substantial losses. West confirmed to members that the club had “run out of cash,” necessitating the acceptance of the ECB’s terms.

The news comes after a report in The Guardian last week alleged Sussex had been placed into “special measures” for financial mismanagement and breaches of sustainability regulations. Despite finishing fourth in Division One in 2025 after promotion from Division Two in 2024, the club now faces significant constraints.

Paul Farbrace, Sussex’s head coach since December 2022, acknowledged the possibility of further sanctions, including a points deduction, but urged his players to remain focused on the upcoming season, which begins on April 3rd with a match against Leicestershire. Farbrace told BBC Sussex that the club was in talks with the ECB to find “help and support for the club financially.”

Adrian Harms, a commentator for BBC Radio Sussex, reported on the details of the AGM, highlighting the conditions of the ECB bailout and the concerns raised by club members. Mark West indicated that the club would necessitate ECB permission for all future player signings.

The situation at Sussex follows a period of change in the County Championship. In April 2025, the BBC reported on the prospects for all clubs, with Adrian Harms providing analysis for BBC Radio Sussex. The 2025 season saw Yorkshire promoted and Lancashire relegated.
