SunPass vs. E-ZPass: State-by-State Toll Road Access

Florida drivers have increasingly relied on SunPass, the state’s prepaid toll program, as more toll roads transition to electronic payment systems. However, the utility of a SunPass transponder extends beyond Florida’s borders, though the level of access varies significantly depending on the type of device purchased.

SunPass offers two primary transponder options: the SunPass Mini and the SunPass PRO. The SunPass Mini, priced at $4.99 plus tax, is designed for use within Florida, Georgia, Kansas, North Carolina, Oklahoma, and Texas. It is not intended for use outside of these states. The SunPass PRO, costing $14.95 plus tax, provides broader compatibility, functioning not only in the aforementioned states but also wherever E-ZPass is accepted.

The expansion of electronic toll collection has driven the popularity of SunPass. Florida’s Turnpike, which operates and maintains toll roads through collected revenues, identifies SunPass as the “preferred method” of payment. Customers can also utilize other interoperable transponders, pay with cash, or opt for TOLL-BY-PLATE, but SunPass users typically save an average of 25% on tolls.

The compatibility of SunPass with E-ZPass significantly expands its geographic reach. E-ZPass is accepted across numerous states along the East Coast, offering SunPass PRO holders a seamless toll payment experience while traveling. The SunPass system itself is also compatible with E-Pass, issued by the Central Florida Expressway Authority, and LeeWay.

While a Toll Relief Program was in effect between April 1, 2024, and March 31, 2025, offering toll savings to SunPass customers, the program has concluded. However, SunPass continues to provide cost savings, with customers still realizing an average 25% discount on Florida tolls.

SunPass transponders are affixed to a vehicle’s windshield and automatically deduct toll charges from a prepaid account as the vehicle passes through equipped lanes. The system is utilized on toll roads, bridges, and managed lanes throughout Florida, ensuring customers always receive the lowest available toll rate. The Florida Department of Transportation oversees the SunPass program.
