The closure is a further blow to Kimberley’s fragile economy, where unemployment is high and the diamond mining sector

Sun International Closes Flamingo Casino in Kimberley After 24 Years of Operation

November 6, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Flamingo Casino in Kimberley permanently shut its doors at 3am on 1 November 2026, marking South Africa’s first permanent closure of a licensed land-based casino and leaving roughly 100 jobs in jeopardy while threatening provincial gambling board levies. Moneyweb first reported the wind-down in July 2026 as part of a broader restructuring across Sun International’s smallest properties.

The 24-year-old property on the outskirts of the Northern Cape capital operated 250 slot machines and seven gaming tables within a 5,200m2 complex next to the Kimberley Golf Club. Developed at a cost of approximately R110 million, Sun International owns 71.4% of the asset alongside the Teemane Consortium. The permanent shutdown arrived after years of persistent income contraction and operational deficits.

Shrinking Revenue Triggers Closure Decision

Financial metrics show the acute deterioration of the Kimberley property. In the first six months of 2026, Flamingo recorded an adjusted operating loss of R9 million against an income of R38 million, following an adjusted operating loss of R7 million in 2025 according to G3 Newswire. Revenue declines accelerated sharply over a three-year window. Income dropped 10% in 2024, worsened by 13% in 2025, and plunged by 21% in the first half of 2026.

Sun International chief executive Ulrik Bengtsson pursued a financial discipline strategy centred on finding solutions for underperforming assets. While the group rolled out a low-cost “Casino Lite” operating model at three other struggling assets—Golden Valley in Worcester, Meropa in Polokwane, and Windmill in Bloemfontein—Flamingo failed to meet the recovery thresholds required to justify the pivot. Management concluded that even under a centralised, low-cost model, the Kimberley property could not return to profitability.

In July 2026, Sun International initiated a Section 189 employee consultation process affecting all four of these smaller regional venues. While the exact headcount at the time of closure has not been formally finalised, public records from 2019 indicate the property employed 173 people prior to the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent workforce restructurings.

Local Unemployment Rates and Digital Wagering Threaten Kimberley Economy

The closure exposes deep economic vulnerabilities within the Sol Plaatje Local Municipality, where unemployment hovers just over 30%, and the broader Francis Baard district, where joblessness exceeds 34%. Kimberley’s local economy suffered severe contractions following the slump in rough diamond prices over the past year, culminating in provisional liquidations for major underground and surface operations at Ekapa Minerals and Ekapa Resources earlier in 2026.

Beyond local mining headwinds, land-based casinos across South Africa face an existential shift toward digital wagering. National Gambling Board data from 2024/25 indicates that online betting now commands 86% of gross gambling revenue. Traditional casinos, which captured 78% of gross gambling revenue a decade ago, now account for just 22.3%.

Levies from the province’s two licensed casinos—Flamingo and the independent Desert Palace in Upington—comprised more than a third of the Northern Cape Gambling Board’s total revenue in the 2023/24 financial year. The viability of the regulator, which merged into the Northern Cape Gambling and Liquor Board in 2024, faces immediate fiscal strain following the loss of its primary Kimberley taxpayer.
